Essays in Hanseatic History: The King s Lynn Symposium 1998
Multigenre Research: Choosing Topics. Note: This is the essays in hanseatic second in a series of posts about Multigenre Research Projects. For an introduction, read more here. I am going through this project step-by-step to for college, avoid a really long post. I hope you#8217;ll find some of it interesting and worthwhile! You might think I would start by essays in hanseatic telling you exactly what multigenre research and composition is.
But, I#8217;m going to hold off, just as I did with my students for written the first couple of weeks of the project. (Organizational note: We completed the project over the course of seven weeks, meeting once a week during that time period. History? Much of each class meeting was spent on the fundamental principles of writing pedagogy. About a hour of each class meeting was dedicated to this multigenre research project, including time for explanation, mini-lessons about research and well written for college, genre, independent writing, peer and teacher conferencing, and sharing.) There were two main contributing factors to the design of this assignment. First, the instructor who taught the course before me included a multigenre project on diversity. The idea appealed to me, but I didn#8217;t commit until an event happened last semester, when I taught a Children#8217;s Literature and Oral Language course. During that semester, the students in essays in hanseatic our elementary education program pulled some faculty together to well essay, share their views on what was working in their program and what wasn#8217;t. History? They taught us a lot that day, but one critique struck me particularly hard. The students said that they heard about diversity a lot in their classes. But, our students told us, when we talked about diversity, we only seemed to talk about racial diversity or students from essays, diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. In my department, we work to develop anti-racist educators who are also mindful of social class.
While we still have a long way to go, we have definitely made this a priority for discussion in many of our classes and we will continue to work on in hanseatic, these topics. In spite of all this talk about diversity, though, I knew the students were right. They were not getting nearly enough information about all the other ways people can be diverse, at least not in my classes. When I re-designed the multigenre research project, I thought about this problem, and essays volunteering, decided to develop the project to address it. Essays In Hanseatic History? To begin, I invited the spanish 2 essay students to select a group of history people, different than themselves, that interested them. Spanish 2 Essay? The group would be their general topic of essays history study. This was a tricky proposition for a number of reasons. Most importantly, I didn#8217;t want my students to become more rigid or monolithic in find thesis management administrati their thoughts about diversity. So, we talked about the way that any group we chose to study would contain a lot of diversity in itself. Essays History? Our work will always be oversimplified. This does not mean that the real thesis work isn#8217;t worth doing, but that we always have to keep this complexity in mind.
Thankfully, multigenre research seems to invite complexity. But, more on that later. For the first week, that was it. The students#8217; only assignment was to think about what they wanted to study. They could interpret #8220;diversity#8221; however they chose.
To my surprise, it did not take long for people to ask me if they could study groups that they belonged to themselves. It turns out that many of my students felt like they were part of cultural groups that were misunderstood. They wanted to research and write about themselves and their cultures to help others (and even themselves) understand. Not really knowing how this would turn out, I agreed to essays history, let the students pursue this self-focused kind of research as well. I thought back to my experience conducting an essay on being proud an american I-Search in my Information Literacy course with Dr. Julie Tallman. As Dr.
Tallman used to say, when we do personal research we do not choose our research topics, #8220;our research topics choose us.#8221; With that in mind, I encouraged the students to pursue whatever topic about culture that seemed to pull at them. In Hanseatic History? Here is a sampling of their topics: Students with gay parents. Perpetrators of school violence. Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. Students with chronic illnesses. Students who have been incarcerated.
Victims of sexual abuse. Students with alcoholic parents. As you can see, the essay students selected a wide range of essays in hanseatic history topics. If I had developed a list for them to choose from, I#8217;m quite certain that most of these topics would not have appeared. For many of them, the simple process of choosing a topic was an spanish 2 essay opportunity to in hanseatic history, think about what #8220;diversity#8221; means to them. It turned out to be much broader than many of them had considered. This became even more clear when they heard about all the other topics being studied.
Here we are at the end of the post, and many of find ph.d thesis management you may still be wondering what multigenre research is. At this point, so were the students. In Hanseatic? I asked the students to trust that I would guide them through the ph.d administrati process, and I guess I#8217;m asking that of you as well. In the essays in hanseatic next post, we will talk about information sources and the way they managed their research. We welcome your comments! #8220;Our research topics choose us.#8221; That really resonated with me. What an interesting mix of for college topics your students choose and I#8217;m sure they were excited to be able to choose what they really wished to understand.

MIS Laboratory – Resources for history, Tech Faculty and essay questions Students MIS Laboratory – Resources for Tech Faculty and essays Students. Software, curriculum, career, contest, and news resources. Written For College! Hosted by history Randy Guthrie, PhD – Microsoft Technical Evangelist. How to essay proud to be, Get a Job At Microsoft Part II: Writing an Awesome Resume. by Randy Guthrie Microsoft Academic Developer Evangelist. Over the history, past few months I visited nine college campuses, attended three conferences and conducted a hand-full of job interviews, and in the process I’ve seen scores of resumes. One thing I’ve been impressed with is how awful most of them are. I realize that I am probably jaded by essays my experience as a career coach and service at a community career center, but still I find it amazing that something that is essays in hanseatic so critical for getting a job is so poorly understood; particularly by those who need jobs the most ie: students seeking internships and new college graduates. The good news is essays that if you do even a moderately good job of writing your resume you have a pretty good chance of in hanseatic history standing out from your competitors. I’ve put off writing this post because it is a daunting task trying to write general guidance that will be useful to most readers, and I’ve struggled how to do this briefly, but I’ve given up and essay sat apologize in advance for the length of this post and history hope most will find something useful in the next few thousand or so words. Let me state that I recognize that there are many ways to write a great resume, and this is just one of those ways, but since this way has always worked so far for the folks I’ve helped, that’s what I’m sticking with.
I also recognize that a resume is very personal, and you need to ph.d thesis on financial administrati, be comfortable with how it looks, so deviation from history this guidance is experience fine (and necessary) since everyone is different and some situations will need to history, be handled differently than shown below. If you have questions about a specific type of essays situation ASK IN A COMMENT TO THIS POST and I promise I will answer in an additional comment or even a follow-up post. Your questions will make this post even more valuable to everyone that reads it. First, some useful links: Resume Workshop Video : This is an animated PowerPoint presentation with my audio commentary that covers the content of this post and more Interviewing Workshop Video: This is an animated PowerPoint presentation with audio commentary on how to prepare for a behavioral interview MIS Laboratory Student Page: lots of useful career links. Now let’s dig in.
GENERAL FORMATTING PAGE LENGTH. One Page Please! Most managers will only look at your resume for essays, 15-20 seconds before deciding whether to keep reading or put your resume in what I call “The Big Pile”. If you haven’t hooked the find ph.d, reader by then, you’ve lost the first round to someone who can tell their story succinctly. Two or three-page resumes do not increase your chances that the in hanseatic history, reader will find something interesting, it actually makes it less likely they will find (by scanning) something that they care about.
So try to keep it to a page. I’ve never seen someone other than a college professor who needed more than one page to land an interview. White Paper Standard Fonts Unless you are a graphic artist, using colored paper, odd shapes fancy type fonts are not going to make the kind of impression that gets an interview. Real! Superficial attempts to in hanseatic, differentiate yourself can backfire, because the essays about, reader may assume you are childish, unprofessional, or don’t have any meaningful content. Essays History! Use the same type face throughout, but you can use different sizes and italics to make it easier to find ph.d, scan. Don’t go smaller than 11 pt font or larger than13 pt font for the main text. The examples that follow will show when larger and smaller fonts are appropriate. There are two approaches that I like to essays in hanseatic history, use. The first is useful if you don’t have a lot of relevant experience and spanish 2 essay you are trying to fill space. Essays! While one of the examples show the spanish 2 essay, hyperlink in blue, do not use colored ink when printing a paper copy of essays in hanseatic your resume. Of course if you provide an common sat, electronic copy of your resume, live hyperlinks can be useful and save the reader time if not used excessively.
Your name and essays history contact information should be grouped together. I personally don’t like having a person’s name on the left and the contact information on the right. In the example my name is well essay for college 28pt and essays contact info is 11pt. You can go as low as nine point, but if space is an option use the two line format on the right. Two additional pieces of advice: (1) use only real ph.d thesis on financial, one phone number, and make sure it is one where you can get a message (change the recorded greeting if necessary so as to in hanseatic, project a professional image) and find real ph.d management administrati (2) avoid cryptic or childish e-mail addresses, and use only essays, one of those as well. Some career advisors will tell you not to put a career or employment objective statement. My advice is to use one. My reason is simple: I debriefed a recruiter from a major aerospace company after a job fair and he told me that he put any resume he received without a [clear] objective statement in the trash, because his HR department would not know where to ph.d on financial administrati, route it. Essays In Hanseatic History! So my advice is to use one and make it count. Here’s how: Your objective statement should say in under ten words the kind of job you are looking for.
For example: “Seeking a senior-level account executive position in the Pharmaceutical industry”. Do not use airy, empty, and vague statements that don’t say anything such as “seeking a challenging position with a leading company where my skills and strengths can be utilized”. You would be amazed at how many people think that is what you are supposed to write. I saw a resume written just this week that had an ph.d thesis on financial administrati, objective statement that said “To play a significant role in an organization that aspires to be extraordinary”. These kinds of statements don’t help and can actually delay the reader from in hanseatic learning anything of value about you. But What If I’m Qualified for More Than One Kind of Job? If you are going to well written for college, a career fair, then you should probably take several (three or four or even five) versions of your resume. Most job fairs will list the essays, companies and the jobs they are recruiting for in advance so if you are prepared, then you can know how many versions you should take. For example, you can have different resumes that focus on web development, database, or application development, information security, or telecommunications.
If you are applying to a specific company, then you tailor the spanish 2 essay, objective statement (actually the in hanseatic, entire resume) for sat, that specific job. If you are applying for an internship or job right out of college, your education is your biggest selling point, so it needs to go before any previous work experience. Since most recruiters will know what school they are recruiting from, and name of the school is less important and the college major / minor and date of essays in hanseatic history completion. Once you’ve graduated and are on the street, then where you went to spanish 2 essay, school is more important than the major. Essays History! Here is how I would handle both situations: In these examples, I put the degree major first, because that is the essay, first thing a recruiter will care about. I also put my my recent (and most impressive!) degree first. Notice I don’t put GPA. There are two reasons: 1) it clutters up the page with less-important information, and history 2) unless you graduated with a 4.0, most people won’t think there is much difference between a 3.5 and spanish 2 essay a 3.8. History! If your GPA is less than a 3.6, it probably doesn’t differentiate you from essays others, so leave it off unless an in hanseatic history, employer requires it.
If your GPA is under 3.0, then I don’t have to explain why you would leave it off. If you graduated with honors, and spanish 2 essay it says so on your transcript, then by all means mention it as in the first example. If you college doesn’t award honors, do not make it up, even if your 3.9 GPA would have gotten you honors at a college that awards them. If you need to put a GPA in, then I would put it just to essays, the right of the university name. What should I put if I have not graduated yet? This is one of my favorite resume techniques.
The minute you start attending school you can put that you are working on a degree, and post your anticipated graduation date. The cool part is that you format it just like these examples, but word the graduation date a little differently like the “PhD degree” in the example, and put the essay sat, graduation date in the future! No one is going to be fooled by this, so don’t worry about looking like you are trying to get away with something, but what it does do is make your resume subtly look complete. Plus it does answer the question about what you might be good at. What about other school accomplishments? Where should they go? Great question! If you were the valedictorian, ASB president, or president of a club, then I would list up to three (but probably not more) bullet points underneath the senior project or thesis (if you mentioned one) or university name (if you didn’t). These should be quantified accomplishments in the form I describe in the next section. If you have more than two or three years of work experience in the field you are applying for, then your experience is more important to a potential employer than your education, so once you' are no longer a new college grad, your education goes at essays history the bottom of your resume and this section goes right under the objective. Why?
Because it will be of most interest to the reader and on being an american you want it read during those first precious 20 seconds. Now there are lots of different ideas floating around about how you should format this section; the most common is to put the date on the left. The fact is essays in hanseatic that the find ph.d thesis on financial management, date is the least important piece of information relating you your employment history. Far more important is essays in hanseatic history what you did, and volunteering then for whom you did it. When you did it is last.
The order that I recommend you present the facts about essays in hanseatic, each job is: Job Title Company Name Employment duration One sentence job description Two - Four Quantified Accomplishments. Most of the resumes I have seen (and written early in my career) were based on an old formula of describing the job in essays for macbeth, terms of the formal job description. Essays In Hanseatic! The problem with this approach that it doesn’t differentiate the writer from everyone else applying for about experience, the job. Can you imagine how hard it would be to pick someone to interview for a bookkeeping job if every experienced bookkeeper that applied only listed their job duties?
Every resume would say almost the exact same thing ! To avoid this problem, and to really make you shine, we write the work experience section so that we focus on quantified accomplishments . This example shows my recommended format, and includes three quantified accomplishment statements. An accomplishment is “quantified” when you describe it in terms of some quantity. I like to essays, try to on being an american, get two numbers in each accomplishment if possible. Numbers make your claims more credible, and if you have some kind of big numbers, it can really make a good impression. Don’t over sell; let the numbers speak for you. If you can describe an accomplishment in a single line, that is fantastic. In fact, leaving some information out in hanseatic simply begs the reader to want to know more.
If you get invited for spanish 2 essay, an interview, you can bet you’ll be asked about essays in hanseatic, these accomplishments, and how can you go wrong talking about something you did that was great? Don’t forget to mention awards and recognitions like Employee of the month three times” or “Top Producer in 2008”. Notice also that I have my job title in bold and in a larger font. I do that so that it is to be easier for the reader to essays, visually scan. Notice also that the company name is in italics. That helps set the different facts apart.
I have each fact separated by written essay for college more than a couple of spaces so that each stands out. Now a bit more about job titles. Sometime you might have an “official” job title that is so vague, or even wrong based on what you do. For example, I had three lateral job changes at an aerospace company that did not change my payroll classification, so my managers never bothered to updated my “requisition” to reflect the changes in essays, my job title. So if you were to call the HR department and ask what my job title was, they would use the title I was hired at, not the one from the last job I held! So on my resume, you can bet I use the title from the last job I was assigned to, not my “official” job title. The moral of the story is that if your “real” job title is too vague, or even deceptive, do not be afraid to find thesis, put a more accurate, clear job title on the resume . In Hanseatic History! Example: if you had an internship in a finance department, and essays volunteering experience your “official” title was “Intern”, do not be afraid to essays in hanseatic, use “Intern-Finance Department”.
I try to avoid this section if possible. Volunteering Experience! It’s much better to talk about the tools and skills you know in your accomplishments statements. But if you learned how to do something in in hanseatic, class, but haven’t used it on common sat, the job, and the job you are applying for wants candidates who have this skill, you need to essays in hanseatic history, use this section. But be careful. Here are some recommendations: Do not list skills and knowledge that almost everyone has. The most common offender here is that you know Microsoft Office.
As a recent college graduate, we assume you learned the basic programs. Stating it here does not differentiate you. Avoid huge long lists using every acronym you can think of ie: ASP.net, C#, C++, PHP, etc. Remember you are targeting each resume for a particular job, so only list the things a potential employer cares about. Spanish 2 Essay! Huge list casts doubt on which of those you really know. When I see a big list I seriously doubt that the author really has working knowledge of all those technologies and his/her credibility really starts to slip. Be accurate in describing your knowledge. At Microsoft, if someone says he/she knows something, 9 times out of 10 we’ll make them prove it in an interview. If you say you know C++, you can bet you’ll be ask to essays in hanseatic, write a bubble sort or something like that in C++ on a white board during an interview.
If its been 5 years since that Java class and essay for college you’ve not written a single line of code since then, don’t say you know Java. Remember, your resume is history just supposed to get you invited for an interview, not get you a job offer. Ph.d On Financial Administrati! That is what the interview is history for. Keep your resume simple and focused on proud to be, a single job. Keep it to a single page. Catch-all, general-purpose resumes DO NOT WORK. You can send out essays in hanseatic history hundreds of these and you will never get a single response (I know – I tried it when I was young and inexperienced). On the other hand, you can send out essays about ten, customized, targeted resumes using the approach outlined here and may get three, five, or even eight responses. This technique works if you have actually have sometime to offer an employer. Your resume is a personal statement of who you are from in hanseatic history a particular point of view.
You’ll get all kinds of common sat advice about how to history, do your resume, but you don’t have to do exactly as everyone tells you. If you feel like you know better, then go with your gut feeling. Lastly, check out the additional (and more detailed) examples and well written essay for college guidance at essays history the links at the top. There really is some good information there that I’ve gleaned from years of spanish 2 essay coaching students and others to essays history, get high-tech jobs in essays, a competitive job market. And finally, PROOF READ everything many, many times, and have others look at your resume as well. In Hanseatic! (career center people are invaluable for this). Good luck and good job hunting! [Note: an earlier version of this post mysterious lost most of its content, hence this repost] I don’t think the one page resume works in the IT industry if you are experience.
I tried that once after reading an for college, article like this and was summarily eviscerated by a recruiter for ruining my resume. The few times I’ve been on the market, my three page resume (4 with references) easily landed me interviews. Of course, I put the vital information on the front page in a summary section. Working with a recruiter is a different situation. Essays History! The recruiter wanted every fact he could get his hands on. He was then going to be the hiring company’s filter. He would look at a job, and then market those parts of on being your resume that was a good fit. Had you attempted to essays, get an interview with those companies yourself with your long resume, there is essays a chance they would have quit reading it before they got to in hanseatic, the parts they cared about. Essays! It is certain that the essays, parts they cared about could have fit on essay, a single page, and that is the goal. The trick of course is essays history trying to guess from the job listing what a company will consider to be your relevant experience. My son-in-law recently completed a job search, and well essay I helped with his resume.
His recruiter commented that my son-in-law’s [one page] resume was the essays in hanseatic, first he had ever seen that he didn’t feel like it needed fixing. So while I think there are situation where the use of a longer resume is justified (like college professor jobs), I still believe that an individual applying for jobs is well served by essay questions a customized, targeted single-page resume. I am a graduate in essays in hanseatic history, the Manufacture Engineering field from two colleges and the same degree. One is a 2yr and the other is a 4yr. The problem I am having is for macbeth that there is never an opening for Entry Level Positions. All the jobs that are available and have gotten in the past are ones that are looking for a candidate with 5-10 years of experience. Essays In Hanseatic! Since I really only have 2 years, my resume is about 3-4 pages long in hopes that I can sell myself for the 8 years I do not have. Ph.d Thesis On Financial Administrati! Plus about 95% of the time I get calls for possible jobs through recruiters. (Since this is how Industrial jobs are filled) Other jobs that I have on my resume are car mechanic places that show I am mechanical incline and can be more than an office employee. Every person that has read my resume does not believe that I should eliminate any mechanical experiences that I have.
What should I do in this case, and essays in hanseatic history should both colleges remain on the resume?? Do you have any full resume examples? I was also wondering if you had any resume templates available for entry-level jobs. I am trying to get either an internship of thesis on financial management entry-level part-time job in essays, the marketing field. One of the essays about volunteering, things you haven’t addressed with experienced workers is history how to about experience, handle contract work (which Microsoft apparently believes in for project work.) I know you don’t handle experienced workers so I am probably barking up the wrong tree. In any event, the way I see it, as a contractor I work for myself and history subcontract my services.
Initially I would list every project I worked on spanish 2 essay, (that sometimes last a week), but realized that this isn’t the way you do it if you work as a full-time consultant. So, now I just list the highlights of these projects under my consulting job. Of course recruiters get mad since they want to essays in hanseatic, see every one listed out. I now looked at your video and its all clear. I still plan to keep to about, 1 page. Hi Randy. this blog is pretty impressive, liked it!
I have a question to in hanseatic, you. I'm willing to apply for a microsoft full time position in their software development and written essay i'm confused whether to submit a one page resume or a multi page one after reading your blog. Can you give me your suggestions? If applying for in hanseatic, a Microsoft marketing internship would it be better to use their CV or would it be more appealing to spanish 2 essay, upload a multimedia resume such as a power point presentation or create a website marketing myself? To be honest, our recruiters only have so much time to give to any one resume (like 20 seconds), and one of the in hanseatic history, tests of fitness is if a candidate can highlight their strengths concisely on a single page. I have seen some great resumes that struggled to fill half a page because every word was gold. In my opinion, a PowerPoint presentation or web page misses the point. One of my favorite examples is that you don't catch a fish by throwing your entire tackle box in the river, you catch a fish by essays knowing what one fly or lure to history, use out of all the stuff in your tackle box.
Highlight the stuff you have done demonstrates your passion for software development by what you did outside of class or work assignments. Highlight your leadership (active or passive). Highlight the essay proud to be, differentiators that relate to the job you area applying for. In Hanseatic! Put the things that Microsoft will care the most about early in your resume rather than later. About Experience! Use as few a words as possible. Don't make long lists of computer programs you have used a few times hoping that the key word search will select you. We're smarter than that. Highlight awards and recognition you have received. One of the in hanseatic, hottest differentiators right now are apps.
We'll talk to anyone that has published apps in the Windows Store or Windows Phone Marketplace, or iOS or Android stores, particularly if you've had a bunch of downloads or made some real money from them. Essays For Macbeth! That kind of third-party evidence is very compelling to essays in hanseatic, Microsoft recruiters. I would like to know what you feel the best way to put open source contributions on your resume is. I can't decide whether I should write it in detail similar to essays volunteering experience, a job, or as a bullet point in a personal projects section. @Karan, Great question.
You are definitely thinking about this in in hanseatic, the right way. Real On Financial Management! My feeling is that you can go either way, depending on the scope of the contribution. Job History for a big contribution, personal project for a smaller contribution. In Hanseatic History! Using the spanish 2 essay, job history approach, I would use the title Contributer or something similar, and the company as the open source application and the date from the first contribution to the most recent. Then the bullets would be either feature names and number of lines of code, or if it is a major feature, then the bullets would detail your contribution ie: lines of code, rating or other quality measure, number of users of the feature, etc. Hello mam. I went through your article. I am presently pursuing my B.Tech in Computer Science And Engineering . What do I need to in hanseatic history, do to get a Job at Microsoft? It will be a pleasure to have a live chat with you mam/ @Subham Soni: Start at spanish 2 essay http://www.microsoft.com/careers and then select the essays history, Student or Recent Grad link.
Then read about the various jobs and how to apply for them. Good luck! I like the one page idea and want to for college, convert to it. The problem is, I want to change industries (out of mortgages into essays in hanseatic, tech, data, SAS sales) but I have had 9 different positions in the last 13 years, due to company closures, career advancement into well, management, and banking legislative changes. I know it is critical that I list how my skill-set and accomplishments will translate to the new industry/position, but how do I handle not having the room to list all of my positions without leaving gaps and essays in hanseatic raising suspicion that I am leaving something out? I'm not sure how to check back on this post, so if you could be so kind to forward your response to me at email@example.com, I would greatly appreciate it. This article was very well written and spanish 2 essay you are clearly an essays in hanseatic, expert so I look forward to any suggestions or advice you can offer.
@Joe Saylor This is a case where a cover letter may be necessary to assure the hiring organization that you are not a job-hopper by explaining the reasons. The goal for you is to show thoughtful career trajectory where each step reflects personal growth. What I would experiment is to think of yourself (for purposes of common sat approaching your resume design) as a consultant with multiple clients over certain period of time. Essays In Hanseatic! So you cluster by role since I would expect you did more or less the same thing for on being proud to be, a couple of different companies. I might even omit the essays in hanseatic history, company name in the first line, and mention multiple companies in the description section. Again, I've never done a resume in exactly this way, but hopefully my sort of thinking out loud will show you how to approach this. It might be simpler to well for college, just go with two pages and to in hanseatic, limit your earlier jobs to one or two lines. A two-page resume isn't all that bad. Written Essay! It is definitely better than doing something overly weird or awkward. When we are applying for interships of in hanseatic history companies like microsoft or google, being a second year student of IT what should our resume should contain? Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write this article, it has been a great help to me as I'm restructuring my resume.
When where should I add references? Randy, I have a bunch of essay proud to be an american personal projects which I work on in hanseatic, and off, all close to my heart, and I work on them because I really really love programming. That of course means some of them are not finished, but they are there. Should I then include the github links to them? Randy, should I include personal projects – not academic – on resume too? Impressive and useful post! Should resume include a scanned picture of the writer? and Should the writer include the questions sat, projects for which he's not having a certificate and history are self made (made only in common essay sat, a hobby practice)? Thank you for your reply. @Umar: My advice about essays in hanseatic, personal projects is to start a business, even if not formally or officially, but list your personal projects as an employee of common essay your own company. Avoid a pretentious title like CEO or President and in hanseatic use something like Founder and volunteering experience Lead Developer. @ChristNolan: I wouldn't include a picture unless you are applying for a position as a model or acting talent; in essays in hanseatic history, that case your agency can advise.

Thank you so much, Elaine. we are so grateful for your family's service and sacrifice. and essays history we will always have your back. Over the about volunteering experience, past few years as First Lady, I have had the in hanseatic history, extraordinary privilege of essay to be traveling all across this country. And everywhere I've gone, in the people I've met, and the stories I've heard, I have seen the very best of the essays, American spirit. I have seen it in the incredible kindness and spanish 2 essay warmth that people have shown me and essays in hanseatic history my family, especially our girls. I've seen it in teachers in a near-bankrupt school district who vowed to keep teaching without pay. I've seen it in people who become heroes at a moment's notice, diving into on being proud to be an american, harm's way to save others. flying across the country to put out a fire. driving for hours to bail out a flooded town.
And I've seen it in our men and women in uniform and our proud military families. in wounded warriors who tell me they're not just going to walk again, they're going to run, and they're going to history run marathons. in the young man blinded by a bomb in Afghanistan who said, simply, . I'd give my eyes 100 times again to have the real ph.d on financial administrati, chance to do what I have done and what I can still do. Every day, the essays, people I meet inspire me. every day, they make me proud. every day they remind me how blessed we are to common live in the greatest nation on in hanseatic history, earth. Serving as your First Lady is an honor and a privilege. Real Thesis On Financial Administrati? but back when we first came together four years ago, I still had some concerns about this journey we'd begun. While I believed deeply in history, my husband's vision for this country. and for macbeth I was certain he would make an in hanseatic, extraordinary President. like any mother, I was worried about what it would mean for essay on being an american our girls if he got that chance. How would we keep them grounded under the glare of the essays, national spotlight? First lady Michelle Obama addresses the DNC after being introduced by military mom Elaine Brye, from PBS NewsHour. How would they feel being uprooted from their school, their friends, and the only home they'd ever known? Our life before moving to Washington was filled with simple joys. Proud To Be? Saturdays at in hanseatic history soccer games, Sundays at on being proud grandma's house. and essays history a date night for Barack and me was either dinner or a movie, because as an exhausted mom, I couldn't stay awake for both. And the truth is, I loved the life we had built for our girls.
I deeply loved the man I had built that life with. and I didn't want that to change if he became President. I loved Barack just the experience, way he was. You see, even though back then Barack was a Senator and a presidential candidate. to me, he was still the guy who'd picked me up for our dates in a car that was so rusted out, I could actually see the pavement going by through a hole in the passenger side door. he was the guy whose proudest possession was a coffee table he'd found in a dumpster, and whose only pair of decent shoes was half a size too small. But when Barack started telling me about his family – that's when I knew I had found a kindred spirit, someone whose values and upbringing were so much like mine. You see, Barack and I were both raised by families who didn't have much in the way of money or material possessions but who had given us something far more valuable – their unconditional love, their unflinching sacrifice, and the chance to essays history go places they had never imagined for essays themselves. My father was a pump operator at the city water plant, and he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when my brother and I were young. And even as a kid, I knew there were plenty of days when he was in pain. I knew there were plenty of mornings when it was a struggle for essays him to simply get out of bed. But every morning, I watched my father wake up with a smile, grab his walker, prop himself up against the bathroom sink, and slowly shave and button his uniform. And when he returned home after a long day's work, my brother and real I would stand at the top of the stairs to essays in hanseatic history our little apartment, patiently waiting to essays greet him. watching as he reached down to lift one leg, and history then the other, to for macbeth slowly climb his way into our arms. But despite these challenges, my dad hardly ever missed a day of essays in hanseatic history work. he and my mom were determined to find ph.d give me and my brother the kind of education they could only dream of.
And when my brother and I finally made it to in hanseatic college, nearly all of our tuition came from student loans and essays for macbeth grants. But my dad still had to essays pay a tiny portion of that tuition himself. And every semester, he was determined to pay that bill right on time, even taking out loans when he fell short. He was so proud to be sending his kids to college. and he made sure we never missed a registration deadline because his check was late. You see, for my dad, that's what it meant to be a man. Like so many of us, that was the measure of his success in life – being able to earn a decent living that allowed him to support his family. And as I got to know Barack, I realized that even though he'd grown up all the find real ph.d thesis on financial management, way across the in hanseatic history, country, he'd been brought up just like me. Barack was raised by about volunteering a single mother who struggled to pay the in hanseatic history, bills, and by grandparents who stepped in essays for macbeth, when she needed help.
Barack's grandmother started out essays in hanseatic history, as a secretary at a community bank. and she moved quickly up the for macbeth, ranks. but like so many women, she hit a glass ceiling. And for in hanseatic years, men no more qualified than she was – men she had actually trained – were promoted up the ladder ahead of her, earning more and more money while Barack's family continued to find thesis on financial management scrape by. But day after day, she kept on history, waking up at dawn to catch the bus. arriving at work before anyone else. giving her best without complaint or regret. And she would often tell Barack, So long as you kids do well, Bar, that's all that really matters. Like so many American families, our families weren't asking for much.
They didn't begrudge anyone else's success or care that others had much more than they did. in on financial administrati, fact, they admired it. They simply believed in that fundamental American promise that, even if you don't start out essays in hanseatic history, with much, if you work hard and do what you're supposed to do, then you should be able to build a decent life for on being proud to be an american yourself and an even better life for your kids and essays history grandkids. That's how they raised us. that's what we learned from their example. We learned about dignity and decency – that how hard you work matters more than how much you make. Essays About? that helping others means more than just getting ahead yourself. We learned about honesty and integrity – that the truth matters. that you don't take shortcuts or play by your own set of rules. and success doesn't count unless you earn it fair and essays in hanseatic square. We learned about gratitude and humility – that so many people had a hand in our success, from the teachers who inspired us to essays for macbeth the janitors who kept our school clean. and we were taught to value everyone's contribution and essays in hanseatic treat everyone with respect. Those are the values Barack and essays about experience I – and so many of you – are trying to pass on to our own children.
That's who we are. And standing before you four years ago, I knew that I didn't want any of that to change if Barack became President. Well, today, after so many struggles and triumphs and moments that have tested my husband in history, ways I never could have imagined, I have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are – it reveals who you are. You see, I've gotten to well written for college see up close and essays personal what being president really looks like. And I've seen how the issues that come across a President's desk are always the hard ones – the problems where no amount of data or numbers will get you to the right answer. the judgment calls where the stakes are so high, and there is no margin for about volunteering error. And as President, you can get all kinds of advice from all kinds of people. But at the end of the day, when it comes time to make that decision, as President, all you have to guide you are your values, and essays your vision, and the life experiences that make you who you are.
So when it comes to rebuilding our economy, Barack is essay on being proud to be, thinking about folks like my dad and like his grandmother. He's thinking about the pride that comes from a hard day's work. That's why he signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to in hanseatic history help women get equal pay for equal work. That's why he cut taxes for working families and essays small businesses and fought to get the auto industry back on its feet. That's how he brought our economy from the brink of collapse to creating jobs again – jobs you can raise a family on, good jobs right here in the United States of America. When it comes to the health of our families, Barack refused to listen to all those folks who told him to leave health reform for another day, another president. He didn't care whether it was the easy thing to do politically – that's not how he was raised – he cared that it was the right thing to do.
He did it because he believes that here in America, our grandparents should be able to afford their medicine. Essays In Hanseatic? our kids should be able to see a doctor when they're sick. and no one in this country should ever go broke because of an accident or illness. And he believes that women are more than capable of making our own choices about common questions sat our bodies and our health care. that's what my husband stands for. When it comes to in hanseatic giving our kids the essay sat, education they deserve, Barack knows that like me and like so many of in hanseatic you, he never could've attended college without financial aid. And believe it or not, when we were first married, our combined monthly student loan bills were actually higher than our mortgage. We were so young, so in written essay for college, love, and so in debt. That's why Barack has fought so hard to increase student aid and keep interest rates down, because he wants every young person to fulfill their promise and be able to attend college without a mountain of in hanseatic history debt. So in the end, for Barack, these issues aren't political – they're personal.
Because Barack knows what it means when a family struggles. He knows what it means to want something more for your kids and grandkids. Barack knows the American Dream because he's lived it. and he wants everyone in this country to have that same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we're from, or what we look like, or who we love. And he believes that when you've worked hard, and done well, and find real ph.d on financial management administrati walked through that doorway of opportunity. you do not slam it shut behind you. History? you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed. So when people ask me whether being in the White House has changed my husband, I can honestly say that when it comes to his character, and essay on being to be an american his convictions, and his heart, Barack Obama is in hanseatic history, still the same man I fell in love with all those years ago.
He's the same man who started his career by essay on being to be turning down high paying jobs and instead working in struggling neighborhoods where a steel plant had shut down, fighting to rebuild those communities and get folks back to work. In Hanseatic? because for Barack, success isn't about how much money you make, it's about the difference you make in people's lives. He's the same man who, when our girls were first born, would anxiously check their cribs every few minutes to ensure they were still breathing, proudly showing them off to everyone we knew. That's the man who sits down with me and our girls for dinner nearly every night, patiently answering their questions about issues in the news, and strategizing about on being to be middle school friendships. That's the in hanseatic, man I see in those quiet moments late at night, hunched over his desk, poring over about volunteering, the letters people have sent him. The letter from the essays, father struggling to essay on being proud to be pay his bills. from the woman dying of cancer whose insurance company won't cover her care. History? from the young person with so much promise but so few opportunities. I see the concern in his eyes. and I hear the determination in his voice as he tells me, You won't believe what these folks are going through, Michelle. Common? it's not right. Essays History? We've got to well keep working to fix this. We've got so much more to in hanseatic history do. I see how those stories – our collection of struggles and hopes and dreams – I see how that's what drives Barack Obama every single day. And I didn't think it was possible, but today, I love my husband even more than I did four years ago. even more than I did 23 years ago, when we first met. I love that he's never forgotten how he started.
I love that we can trust Barack to do what he says he's going to do, even when it's hard – especially when it's hard. I love that for Barack, there is no such thing as us and them – he doesn't care whether you're a Democrat, a Republican, or none of the ph.d thesis management administrati, above. Essays In Hanseatic History? he knows that we all love our country. and he's always ready to listen to good ideas. Common Essay Sat? he's always looking for the very best in everyone he meets. And I love that even in the toughest moments, when we're all sweating it – when we're worried that the bill won't pass, and it seems like all is in hanseatic history, lost – Barack never lets himself get distracted by the chatter and the noise. Just like his grandmother, he just keeps getting up and on being to be an american moving forward. with patience and wisdom, and courage and grace. And he reminds me that we are playing a long game here. and that change is hard, and change is slow, and it never happens all at once. But eventually we get there, we always do.
We get there because of folks like my Dad. folks like Barack's grandmother. men and women who said to themselves, I may not have a chance to essays in hanseatic history fulfill my dreams, but maybe my children will. maybe my grandchildren will. So many of us stand here tonight because of their sacrifice, and longing, and steadfast love. because time and again, they swallowed their fears and on being an american doubts and did what was hard. So today, when the challenges we face start to seem overwhelming – or even impossible – let us never forget that doing the impossible is the history of this nation. it's who we are as Americans. it's how this country was built. And if our parents and essays grandparents could toil and struggle for us. if they could raise beams of steel to the sky, send a man to the moon, and connect the world with the touch of a button. For Macbeth? then surely we can keep on sacrificing and building for history our own kids and grandkids. And if so many brave men and well written essay women could wear our country's uniform and sacrifice their lives for our most fundamental rights. then surely we can do our part as citizens of in hanseatic this great democracy to exercise those rights. surely, we can get to the polls and spanish 2 essay make our voices heard on Election Day. If farmers and blacksmiths could win independence from an empire. if immigrants could leave behind everything they knew for a better life on our shores. if women could be dragged to jail for seeking the vote. if a generation could defeat a depression, and define greatness for in hanseatic all time. if a young preacher could lift us to essay the mountaintop with his righteous dream. and if proud Americans can be who they are and boldly stand at the altar with who they love. then surely, surely we can give everyone in essays history, this country a fair chance at essay proud that great American Dream. Because in the end, more than anything else, that is the story of this country – the in hanseatic, story of unwavering hope grounded in unyielding struggle. That is common questions, what has made my story, and Barack's story, and so many other American stories possible. And I say all of this tonight not just as First Lady. and essays not just as a wife. You see, at the end of the proud an american, day, my most important title is still mom-in-chief.
My daughters are still the heart of essays history my heart and the center of my world. But today, I have none of those worries from four years ago about on financial management whether Barack and I were doing what's best for our girls. Because today, I know from experience that if I truly want to essays history leave a better world for common my daughters, and essays all our sons and daughters. Essays For Macbeth? if we want to give all our children a foundation for history their dreams and opportunities worthy of their promise. if we want to give them that sense of limitless possibility – that belief that here in America, there is always something better out there if you're willing to work for it. then we must work like never before. and we must once again come together and spanish 2 essay stand together for the man we can trust to essays history keep moving this great country forward. my husband, our President, President Barack Obama.

Six Essays in Hanseatic History: Paul Richards: 9781909796331
essay augustus game An Online Encyclopedia of Roman Rulers. Despite vanquishing his opponents in the long series of civil wars 49-45 BC, Caesar did little to address the essays history underlying ills of the Republic. His concerns were first and ph.d on financial, foremost the defeat in the field of his political opponents. During these years, and following his final victory, he was content to maintain control by a combination of the consulship and in hanseatic history, the revived, albeit reviled, dictatorship. Written Essay. Extensive and excessive honors of all sorts were also voted to Caesar by essays, a sycophantic senate: he refused none, save attempts to crown him king. Nevertheless, his broad disregard for spanish 2 essay tradition and precedent, and the general air of arrogance and high-handedness that marked Caesar's dealings with his peers, made him appear Rome's king in all but name.
To be sure, he passed various items of in hanseatic history legislation dealing with immediate problems (for instance, debt relief or the calendar), but he made no serious effort to systematize his position or tackle the issues that had generated the spanish 2 essay Roman Revolution in the first place. In fact, in history, the last months of his life he was planning to leave Rome for several years to common essay questions campaign against the Parthians in the East. That the cabal of history nobles who conspired to kill Caesar included disaffected members of his own party constitutes stark testimony as to the effects of Caesar's tactlessness. On 15 March, 44 BC C. Julius Caesar, dictator for ph.d administrati life, was surrounded by the conspirators at a meeting of the essays in hanseatic senate and cut down with twenty-three stab wounds. He died at the foot of a statue of his great rival, Pompey.
The senatorial Liberators, covered in blood and brandishing their daggers, rushed out to accept the gratitude of the liberated. They met with a somewhat different reception. The people had loved Caesar, even if his recent behavior had been disappointing [] . The Liberators, who were led by L. Cassius Longinus and M. Junius Brutus, held public meetings in the Forum, but the essays about experience reaction of the people was equivocal at best. The senate, meeting on March 17, vacillated and declared an amnesty for the Liberators (inferring legitimacy for their act of tyrannicide) while ratifying all of Caesar's acts and decreeing him a public funeral in the Forum (inferring legitimacy for Caesar's power). Essays History. It may have seemed a workable compromise, but when Caesar's mutilated body was displayed to the crowd and the contents of his will were made public--in which some gardens were bequeathed to the public and an individual stipend given to each member of the essays Roman people--the dam of in hanseatic emotion burst and rioting ensued. Essays. The Liberators fled the city.
Power seemed firmly in the hands of the pro-Caesar camp and, in particular, in those of M. Antonius (Mark Antony), Caesar's right-hand man. The dictator's will, however, had contained something of a political bombshell that was to shake this situation to its foundations. For Caesar named as his chief heir and adopted son one of his three great-nephews, C. Octavius. The nature of the relationship between Caesar and the young Octavius is not clear. Dio claims (45.1.2) that after Octavius reached maturity (in 48 BC), Caesar took him in and began training him to be his successor. This assertion is clearly more informed by essays in hanseatic history, later imperial behavior than by Late Republican practice, and is unlikely in any case, since Caesar was much occupied with the civil wars at this time (49-45 BC).
There is volunteering experience no evidence that the two actually met before Octavius was in his mid-teens, but that the dictator noticed Octavius is hardly to be doubted. Essays. Suetonius ( Aug . Essays. 8.1) presents a more likely series of history events. Questions. In 48 BC the in hanseatic history young Octavius was elected to the pontifical college. When Caesar celebrated his multiple triumphs in September 46 BC, Octavius took part in essay for college, the procession and was accorded military honors. At some time in this period, Octavius was also adlected into the patrician order. He then followed Caesar to in hanseatic history Spain when the latter went to fight the Pompeians at Munda (45 BC). He earned the essays experience admiration of the dictator for the daring of his journey, which included a shipwreck; he was to show this same daring repeatedly in future months and years. Essays In Hanseatic. In 44 BC Caesar nominated the magistrates several years in advance (another shunning of tradition on Caesar's part), and the young man was included as his Master of Horse for 43 or 42 BC.
Despite these indications of favor, it is fair to say that in the broad scheme of things Octavius was a non-player and a political nobody in March 44 BC, when his great-uncle was killed. When he heard of Caesar's murder, Octavius was in Apollonia in Illyricum, preparing to join Caesar on his Parthian campaign. His friends and some senior army officers urged him to take refuge with the army in Macedonia; his family advised that he lie low and come to Rome unthreateningly as a private citizen. He opted for the latter course of action and arrived in southern Italy, south of Brundisium. Here, he heard more details about Caesar's death and common essay questions, of his own adoption. His family, now fearful for his life, urged him to history renounce the adoption and inheritance in order to secure his personal safety. Find Real Ph.d On Financial. In a tremendous act of essays in hanseatic daring, he instead made directly for Brundisium and the large concentration of troops there. Essays. [] Entrance into Politics: April 44-November 43 BC []
Antony paid no attention, at least officially. He sent no deputations to meet Octavian and inquire as to essays his intentions. Perhaps he dismissed the youth's actions as a sideshow bearing little relevance to the main thrust of politics. [] At that time Antony was deeply occupied with several important matters, not the spanish 2 essay least being to secure powerful provinces for himself while downgrading those of Cassius and essays in hanseatic history, Brutus, the leaders of the Liberators. Well Written Essay For College. Thus, when Octavian finally entered Rome toward the end of history April, Antony continued to ignore him. Octavian kept his cool and arranged a meeting. When he showed up--ironically, in the gardens of well written Pompey on the Oppian Hill--he was pointedly kept waiting. The ensuing exchange did not go well. [] In subsequent weeks, Antony blocked Octavian's moves to have his adoption officially recognized and also prevented him from standing for public office. But Octavian curried favor with the crowd, and essays in hanseatic, tensions with Antony rose. Well Written. []
Events around Mutina in essays history, northern Italy brought matters to a head, both between the Caesarian camp and the Liberators and between Antony and Octavian. Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus had been a supporter of Caesar's -- and one of his assassins. The dictator had appointed him to the governorship of Cisalpine Gaul (roughly the Po Valley region of modern Italy), an appointment confirmed by the senate. The senate had also assigned Antony, consul in essays about experience, 44 BC, the province of Macedonia. Through tribunician legislation in June 44 BC, Antony had his command in Macedonia exchanged for that in proximate and powerful Cisalpine Gaul. Essays History. Decimus Brutus's term was up at the end of 44 BC, but Antony decided to assume command of Cisalpine Gaul in November. Decimus Brutus resisted and was supported by a senate largely well disposed toward the Liberators, whom it regarded as tyrannicides. [] Against this backdrop of looming crisis between the questions Caesarians and the Liberators, the relationship between Antony and Octavian continued to deteriorate, despite occasional public reconciliations. Essays. Antony accused Octavian of plotting against spanish 2 essay him, while Octavian attempted, through agents, to undermine the loyalty of the army that Antony was bringing to Italy from essays in hanseatic history Macedonia. Antony went to essays for macbeth Brundisium to essays in hanseatic secure his army (things did not go well there for him), at common questions sat, which juncture Octavian showed his daring once more.
Despite the risk of being branded a public enemy, he toured the Caesarian colonies of Campania and, relying on essays in hanseatic old loyalties, raised a private army from essays for macbeth among Caesar's veterans, perhaps 10,000 strong. It was a vivid demonstration of the power of the name Caesar. Antony, meanwhile, returned to Rome and intended to denounce Octavian to essays in hanseatic the senate when he heard that two of his five legions from Macedonia had defected to Octavian. Fearing the worst, he took the remainder of his force and hastened to attack Decimus Brutus in Cisalpine Gaul. [] The situation was now highly volatile. Decimus Brutus, backed by the senate, was resisting Antony under arms, and retired to the fortified town of Mutina in to be an american, Cisalpine Gaul.
Antony had four legions, Octavian had five. Essays In Hanseatic. All the armed parties were mutually antagonistic. The senate, led by Cicero in his last great political action, identified Antony as the greater threat. [] Cicero and Antony were now on opposing sides, following an acrimonious oratorical exchange in the senate that started in September 44 BC. At this crucial juncture, then, Cicero deployed his considerable rhetorical skill to Octavian's benefit and began to champion his cause as a foil to Antony's power. As a result, on 1 January, 43 BC Octavian's essentially illegal command of for macbeth men under arms was legitimized with a grant of essays history propraetorian power. As such, Octavian continued his preparations to attack Antony, now declared a public enemy, who had begun besieging Decimus Brutus at written essay, Mutina. Octavian, now an official representative of the republic, led his force into the region and moved against Antony. [] In two engagements in April, Antony was bested and fled over the Alps to his political allies in Transalpine Gaul.
Both consuls for 43 BC, however, perished in the fighting around Mutina, and Octavian, as the senior commander on in hanseatic the spot, refused to cooperate any further with Decimus Brutus, a murderer of his father. The senators, it appears, hoped that Octavian would now go away. They appointed Decimus Brutus to the overall command against Antony, issued decrees of public thanks to him, and palmed Octavian off with an ovation. When a commission to distribute land to written essay veterans was set up, Octavian was pointedly omitted. Smarting at such insulting treatment, Octavian bided his time and put in requests for a consulship (with Cicero as his colleague) and a triumph. Meanwhile, Antony was preparing to return to Cisalpine Gaul with enormous forces gained from Caesarian commanders in Transalpine Gaul. The situation remained unstable. []
In the face of all these developments, Octavian once more acted with courage and determination, even if with shocking directness. Having secured his army's loyalty, he marched on Rome and seized the city with eight legions. Three legions brought from history outside Italy to counter him defected. Unsurprisingly, Octavian was elected consul to replace the deceased consuls of 43 BC. He now carried the long-delayed ratification of his adoption, paid out the remainder of Caesar's legacy, revoked the amnesty for the Liberators, and tried and about experience, convicted them en masse and in history, absentia on a single day.
Despite his control of Rome, Octavian's position was perilous. Antony was massing huge forces in Cisalpine Gaul and, across the Adriatic, Cassius and Brutus had taken the opportunity offered by the enmity between the Caesarian leaders to gain control of most of the well written essay for college eastern empire, it might be noted, with no great regard for either legality or scruple. [] These complicated events have been treated here in detail due to their immense importance in establishing Octavian in the mainstream of Roman politics. Dismissed by Antony and then by the senate as a bit player, he proved repeatedly capable of deft and resolute action in defence of his interests. On account of his tender years, he lacked the nexus of influential support that most leading Roman politicians, including Antony, found essential to in hanseatic their success and therefore he had to rely more on direct appeals to the mob, his troops, and supporters of essays Caesar. His actions might not have been always scrupulous or admirable, but Late-Republican politics was a vicious and cutthroat business and few involved adhered solely to principle (the Liberators, for instance, went about the essays in hanseatic eastern empire seizing provinces and only had their acts ratified post factum by a compliant senate). Octavian had only essay for college, two reliable tools available to him at in hanseatic, this early stage in his career: his name, Caesar, and for macbeth, promises of bounty to the soldiers, and he deployed both with daring and decisiveness when he had to. In the autumn of in hanseatic history 43 BC, he was to make his most ambitious move yet. The Triumvirate I: Early Challenges, 43-36 BC. The rule of the three got off to common essay questions sat an inauspicious start.
Their first act was the implementation of proscriptions, unused since the horrible days of history Sulla's dictatorship. Since the well for college property of the essays history proscribed was forfeited, the main motive of the triumvirs in instigating the essay on being proud an american terror appears to have been financial, as many of their most implacable enemies were not in Rome or Italy at all but with Brutus and Cassius in the East. A recent interpretation has questioned this view and argues that the proscriptions were a purely political act, designed to root out all opposition to the triumvirs in Italy. Our sources preserve, in in hanseatic history, excruciating detail, dozens of tragic anecdotes about the proscribed as well as the text of the chilling proclamation announcing the proscriptions. Cicero, Antony's bitter enemy, was one of the first victims, with Octavian's compliance.
The apparent financial reason for find real ph.d thesis on financial the triumvirs' need for money was soon to be made clear, when mass veteran settlements took place. Thousands perished in the chaos and mayhem that inevitably followed hard on the heels of the proscriptions. [] Next, the in hanseatic Liberators had to be dealt with. After a prelude in Africa early in 42 BC, in which a pro-senate governor was ousted by Octavian's appointee, Antony and Octavian moved on Cassius and Brutus in find, the summer and autumn of that same year. The campaign took place in the Balkans and culminated in essays history, a double battle some weeks apart in October at Philippi in well for college, Macedonia.
The Liberators were decisively defeated, Cassius and Brutus committed suicide, and the Caesarians established their control over the whole Roman world. Octavian, who had not played a glorious part in the battles, showed complete implacability in executing any and in hanseatic history, all of those implicated in the murder of Caesar who fell into his hands. Volunteering Experience. A reshuffling of the provinces was required in light of the new situation: Antony got the East but retained Transalpine and Narbonese Gaul; Octavian got most of the West; Lepidus, fast being overshadowed by his more ambitious and history, ruthless partners, was effectively sidelined in Africa. Essays. Following Philippi, Antony moved east, Octavian returned to Italy, and a new polarization of the Roman world began to manifest itself. [] In the West, Octavian faced an immediate problem: the in hanseatic history settlement of some 40,000 veterans in Italian communities. Veteran settlement was of paramount concern, since it spoke to Octavian's trustworthiness as a patron and so could influence the future loyalty of his armies. The procedure entailed the forcible eviction of inhabitants from their land followed by its redistribution as individual plots among the ex-soldiers. Prior to Philippi, eighteen rich towns in Italy had been promised to the soldiers--now it was time to pay up. Beginning in 41 BC and continuing for perhaps a year or more afterward, life in the towns and regions selected for settlement underwent massive disruption. It seems that the dispossessed were not compensated for their loss, so that the essays whole process made Octavian enormously unpopular in Italy. [] This unpopularity generated an opportunity for the opponents of the triumvirate and led to the so-called Perusine War.
One of the consuls of 41 BC was L. Antonius, brother of Mark Antony. Playing on Octavian's poor reputation among the Italians, he stirred up as much trouble for the triumvir as he could. He began spreading rumors that Antony's veterans were being shabbily treated compared to Octavian's and, along with Antony's wife Fulvia, started lobbying for the dispossessed Italians. His actions carried grave political dangers for Octavian, who could not allow army loyalties to be divided in Italy. The big question in in hanseatic history, all this remains how cognizant, even complicit, Mark Antony was in his brother's agitation.
By late in 41 BC the situation had so deteriorated that war between Octavian and L. Antonius in Italy was inevitable. Common Sat. When hostilities broke out, operations focused on Perusia, where Octavian holed Lucius and Fulvia up in early 40 BC up. After several months of in hanseatic siege, Lucius surrendered and was magnanimously spared by to be, Octavian, though the councilors and people of Perusia were not so fortunate: Octavian executed the local council and gave the town over to his soldiers to plunder. He then adjourned to in hanseatic history Gaul, there to essay on being to be supervise the transfer of the region to his own command, since the Antonian governor had died. [] Mark Antony reacted to this situation by in hanseatic history, moving west in the spring of 40 BC and besieging Brundisium. Octavian gathered his forces and marched south to confront him. On Being Proud To Be. The triumvirate appeared to essays in hanseatic be over, its two chief members at essays about volunteering experience, war. However, neither army was keen for essays in hanseatic war and negotiations produced an agreement instead, termed the Pact of Brundisium. By means of this agreement, Antony ceded Gaul to about volunteering Octavian, relinquishing his last foothold in the West, but was confirmed in in hanseatic, the East.
Lepidus continued to languish in common essay questions sat, Africa. Further, Antony was married to Octavian's sister, Octavia. (Fulvia had unexpectedly, and conveniently, died in essays, Greece in the interim.) The triumvirs then travelled to spanish 2 essay Rome amidst scenes of great public rejoicing. [] The attention of the triumvirs was then directed toward Sextus Pompeius in Sicily, who was posing a challenge to their authority in the West. Sextus, the youngest son of essays history Pompey, is one of the common essay questions sat more colorful characters of the Roman Revolution. Essays. Surviving the Pompeian defeat at essay, Munda in 45 BC, he fought guerilla warfare in in hanseatic, Spain and then took to the sea as a pirate leader. When he was recalled to Rome following Caesar's murder, he cautiously sailed to essays for macbeth Massilia and awaited developments. During the war at Mutina, when the fortunes of the senate and essays history, the Liberators appeared to essays for macbeth be in essays history, the ascendant, he found himself appointed prefect of Rome's fleets and Italy's coastal zones (on 20 March, 43 BC). Find On Financial Management. With the establishment of the triumvirate six months later, he seized Sicily and, as a beacon of resistance against the triumvirs, was greatly reinforced by refugees from the in hanseatic proscriptions, survivors of Philippi, those dispossessed by for macbeth, the veteran settlements in Italy, and any remaining forces of republican sentiment. He beat off attempts by Octavian to essays history oust him from Sicily. Antony formed a pact with him, in order to make his move against Octavian in 40 BC but, if Sextus had hoped for some concrete reward for this service, he got none: he benefited in no way from the Pact of Brundisium and was not officially recognized by the triumvirs.
Now he exacted revenge by blockading Italy and placing a stranglehold on Rome's grain supply. Antony and Octavian were forced to essay questions sat act. In Hanseatic. Incapable of assailing Sextus militarily, they were forced to negotiate. At a meeting off the coast at Misenum or Puteoli, an agreement was reached (the Treaty of well written Misenum [or Puteoli]) in the summer of 39 BC. This agreement saw Sextus's control over essays history Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily made official with a promise that he'd be given the Peloponnese and a consulship in due course. Sextus appeared well entrenched in triumviral politics, a fourth important player in the complex game. [] The Treaty of essays about Misenum was to have a short shelf life. Antony returned to the East, to Cleopatra and indecisive campaigns against the Parthians. Octavian remained in Italy and worked at extending his circle of followers and his influence in general. Toward that end, the presence of Sextus Pompeius was an obstacle. When the essays Peloponnese did not come his way as had been promised, Sextus blockaded Italy again in 38 BC.
Octavian moved against him, but lost a naval engagement at questions, Cumae and much of his fleet in a subsequent storm. Essays In Hanseatic. He now appealed to Antony for help. The two met at Tarentum in the summer of 37 BC. Aside from Octavian's acquisition of some 120 ships from Antony for the effort against for college Sextus (in return for a promise of 20,000 Italian troops for Antony's planned Parthian campaign), the meeting saw the triumvirate renewed for a further five years. The office had expired on 31 December, 38 BC, but none of the incumbents had paid any attention to that inconvenient detail and essays in hanseatic, continued to exercise its prerogatives (illegally) for the first months of 37 BC. Now their power was renewed. []
Since equilibrium had been restored with Antony, Octavian now turned his full attention to defeating Sextus. On Being Proud To Be An American. Elaborate preparations, mostly under the direction M. Vipsanius Agrippa, finally readied Octavian's fleet for action in 36 BC. While Agrippa held Sextus's fleet at bay, Lepidus was marshalled from Africa, to assault Sicily from the south. Another of in hanseatic Octavian's generals was to converge on Italy from the northeast, while Octavian himself would move from Campania. But ship-destroying storms and another naval defeat for Octavian at the hands of Sextus seemed to signal the failure of the entire operation. Agrippa, however, saved the day and took several of Sextus's ports before engaging and destroying the rebel's fleet at the battle of Naulochus on about experience 3 September, 36 BC. Sextus fled east but was murdered not long afterward.
Despite reverses, then, Octavian had ultimately emerged victorious and, in Sextus, had eliminated one the history rivals to essay questions sat his position of dominance in the West. Fate allowed him to neutralize the other. Lepidus, so long in the shadows, now decided to essays make a play for on being power. Finding himself in control of twenty-two legions in Sicily, he defied Octavian and essays, made demands that he quit the island for find real management good. Octavian marched in his direction, at which point Lepidus's men deserted him. At an essays embarrassing scene in Lepidus's camp, Octavian spared his former triumviral colleague but stripped him of his powers and confined him to house arrest at the pleasant seaside town of essay Circeii. There he lived out essays in hanseatic, his life unmolested until he died, of natural causes, in 12 BC. [] Octavian was now the unchallenged master of the on being an american Roman West. In Hanseatic History. In one campaigning season he had rid himself of the open challenge of Sextus Pompeius and the sleeping challenge of Lepidus. He set about consolidating his position for the inevitable clash with Antony. The Triumvirate II: Showdown with Antony, 36-30 BC.
In the East, Antony was not faring terribly well. He had, since 36 BC, been involved in written for college, sporadic and difficult contests with the Parthians and Armenians. There had been no decisive outcome and, in fact, there was a rather hasty retreat back to Syria. This was all the essays in hanseatic history more regrettable (in Antony's eyes), since Octavian had been successful against Sextus and then, in 35-33 BC, against the tribes of ph.d on financial management administrati Illyricum. But Antony's behavior in the East raised problems for him in the political arena, fully exploited by history, Octavian. His continuing link with Cleopatra, despite his marriage to about Octavia, was among the essays history most troublesome, and it had produced two children. Antony also appeared to have gone native, wearing eastern dress, with an eastern despot as a consort, and practising eastern customs. Find Real Ph.d Administrati. Even more appalling, having seized Armenia in 34 BC, Antony staged a spectacle in Alexandria's gymnasium known since as the Donations of Alexandria.
In this spectacle, Antony declared Cleopatra Queen of Kings and her son by Caesar, Caesarion, King of Kings; he then divided up the eastern Roman Empire among Cleopatra, Caesarion, and his own children. Essays In Hanseatic. It seemed, from an on being to be Italian perspective, that Antony was under the in hanseatic history spell of spanish 2 essay Cleopatra, whose ultimate goal, it was rumored, was to become Queen of Rome. Furthermore, Antony's recognition of Caesarion as Caesar's son undercut Octavian's most fundamental claim to political leadership. In an atmosphere such as this, tensions rose between Antony and Octavian. At Rome, meanwhile, Octavian further heralded his new image by having his righthand-man Agrippa appointed aedile in 33 BC to see to the restoration of essays many long-neglected services in the city, especially the sewer system and water supply. The city was also beautified with new buildings and essays about volunteering experience, the restoration of dilapidated ones, often by Octavian's supporters acting at his instigation. The popular image of Octavian's caring, popular administration must have been greatly bolstered by these actions. [] The year 32 BC was a difficult one and essays, saw Octavian and Antony finally embark openly on spanish 2 essay the road to war. In the first place, Octavian's second term of triumviral powers ran out on 31 December, 33 BC.
This made his legal position somewhat delicate, but the niceties of legality were far less important than his demonstrable exercise of power and influence, especially among his troops. Essays In Hanseatic. Who was going to challenge him? It is interesting to observe that Octavian immediately ceased using the title triumvir; Antony did not. In dropping the title, Octavian once more ostentatiously respected Roman tradition. As matters turned out, events at Rome were to offer Octavian a new basis for claiming legitimate leadership of the Roman people, albeit a non-legal one. On 1 January, 32 BC, the Antonian consul, C. Sosius issued a speech denouncing Octavian and essays experience, proposing something that required a tribunician veto to quash (the precise content of the proposal is unknown). Octavian, not in in hanseatic history, the city at the time, soon entered with an armed escort, convened the senate, and denounced Antony. This action so effectively cowed the Antonians that Sosius and his fellow consul Ahenobarbus fled eastward followed by the other pro-Antony senators.
News then reached Rome that Antony was forming his own senate in Alexandria from among the exiled senators and that he had officially renounced Octavia as his wife. Octavian, enraged, seized Antony's will from the Vestal Virgins (a completely illegal and unscrupulous act) and read it aloud in the senate. Its contents shocked Roman sentiment: Antony wished to be buried in Alexandria, next to find real ph.d administrati Cleopatra. It seemed to many that, after all, he was indeed planning to establish a renegade eastern empire with a foreign queen at its helm. War was declared on Cleopatra, and traditional rituals revived to emphasize that the official enemy was a foreigner, not a fellow Roman. As preparations for essays in hanseatic history war geared up in the summer of 32 BC, a remarkable thing happened. First Italy and essay for college, then the western provinces swore an oath of allegiance to Octavian personally. Whether the oath was voluntary, as Augustus later claimed in his Res Gestae , or a more carefully orchestrated piece of political theater, Octavian could now claim to be the people's choice for the war against Cleopatra. It was not a legal position, but it was an unassailable one. [] In prospect, the war between Antony and essays in hanseatic, Octavian promised to be the essay on being to be an american largest civil conflict ever conducted by the Romans.

In the end, however, the war ended not with a bang but with a fizzle. The massive forces moved against each other and converged in Greece, as had Caesar and Pompey at in hanseatic history, the outset of an earlier great conflict. The two sides encamped on the north side of the Ambracian gulf, near the promontory of well essay for college Actium . Cleopatra's presence proved problematic for essays in hanseatic Antony, and there were defections to Octavian. Common Essay Sat. Meanwhile, Antony and Cleopatra managed to get their ships blockaded in the gulf by Octavian's fleet, under Agrippa's able command. In an attempt to break out on 2 September, 31 BC (almost five years to the day since Sextus' defeat at Naulochus) Antony was decisively defeated. In ancient accounts, Cleopatra and then Antony fled the essays in hanseatic battle prematurely.
The land forces never engaged, but Antony's men defected to Octavian en masse. Everything had been decided in a few hours of naval warfare. [] The victory of common Octavian was complete. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt. Octavian made his way there via Syria, securing the loyalty of all as he went. Antony's forces and former supporters defected in droves. On reaching Egypt and Alexandria in in hanseatic, the summer of 30 BC, Octavian faced Antony's forces on land and sea. A great battle seemed imminent -- until Antony's navy and experience, cavalry defected en masse before the essays in hanseatic history very eyes of their general and his infantry were defeated (1 August, 30 BC). Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide, and passed from historical reality into the realm of romantic legend.
Octavian had Caesarion and Antony's eldest son (Antyllus) executed, and he annexed Egypt as a province of Rome, ending the essay on being proud Ptolemaic period of that country's history. He was now sole master of the entire Roman world. If, indeed, it had been his intention from the start to reach this position, it must have been a particularly rewarding day. For fourteen years he had played a careful, dangerous, and patient game. Now it was time to secure the future, for essays himself and for Rome. [] From Octavian to Augustus: A New Order Established. In the wake of Actium , however, there was work to be done.
After taking Egypt and settling affairs there, Octavian stayed away from Rome as he saw to the organization of the East. For the most part, Antony's arrangements were left in place, as long as old loyalties were suitably redirected. Octavian returned to Rome and Italy, amid tumultuous celebrations, in August of 29 BC. Large numbers of veterans were settled (perhaps 25 legions totalling 40,000 men or more) both in Italy and spanish 2 essay, the provinces, this time without complaint, since the vast wealth of Egypt allowed for ample compensation. Essays. When he entered Rome, he celebrated three triumphs over three days (over Dalmatia, Actium, and Egypt).
Legally, his difficult position of thesis on financial management 32 BC had been bypassed and Octavian held the consulship every year from 31 BC onwards (until 23 BC). Just as important, however, was the non-legal basis for his dominance, later expressed by Augustus as universal consent. The roots of essays in hanseatic history this consent must lie in the oath of essays 32 BC, now extended in principle, if not in practice, to embrace the entire empire and all its armies. Octavian was, as he later put it, in complete control of affairs precisely because everyone wanted him to be and, just as significantly, because he was the last man standing. Essays. There is political posturing in his claim to universal consent, to be sure, but possibly also some kernel of truth. He had ended the civil wars, and all hopes for a peaceful future now rested with him and him alone. In light of this, the senate and people voted him numerous honors in 29 BC, some of which Octavian judiciously refused, consonant with his image as respecter of experience tradition. In Hanseatic. [] Octavian's holding continuous consulships would be insufficient as a mode of administration in the long term, especially if, as he intended, the old order was to be seen to well be restored. He needed, somehow, to essays history find a firm place simultaneously within and above established norms. His position at the head of essays affairs therefore needed careful consideration, and this no doubt explains the in hanseatic eighteen-month gap between his return to Rome in August 29 BC and the so-called First Constitutional Settlement of 13 January, 27 BC which, with the broadest of brush strokes, began painting the portrait of the new order.
Memories of Caesar's fate must have loomed large. Essays Volunteering. Despite that dictator's huge popularity among the masses, his complete victory over his enemies in civil war, and the devotion of his troops, he had been laid low by a few dozen disillusioned aristrocrats. Among the uppermost considerations pressing on Octavian, therefore, must have been the need to appease the sensibilities of the elite. In addition, the essays divided loyalties of highly politicized armies had been a plague on well written essay the Late Republic. Essays. This situation too would require remedying. These two issues, in fact, were at the heart of the First Settlement, staged in the senate on 13 January, 27 BC. []
On that day, Octavian entered the senate and, to find the shock of those not in the know, surrendered his position and retired to private life. Essays In Hanseatic History. The senators, possibly confused, reacted with indignance and insisted that Octavian remain at the helm of the state. After a show of reluctance, Octavian graciously accepted a share in the running of the state, gaining command of Spain (except Baetica), Gaul, Syria, Cyprus, and Egypt while the senate and people kept the spanish 2 essay rest. History. Within his extended provincia , granted for ten years, Octavian could appoint legates to administer regions on his behalf. Modern scholars have failed to reach agreement on the exact legal status of Octavian's command over his provinces (was it by essays about volunteering, virtue of imperium consulare or proconsulare , imperium maius or aequum ?), but the case for imperium proconsulare is the stronger; it also had precedents, in essays history, the form of the extraordinary commands of Pompey or Caesar in the Late Republic.
This situation would have appealed to Octavian's desire to appear to be maintaining traditions while also doing nothing alarmingly new or innovative. Other honors and management administrati, privileges were also forthcoming, at a second meeting on 16 January. Here Octavian was named Augustus, a word ringing with religious (augur) and social ( auctoritas ) meaning but not suggestive of overt political dominance. C. Julius Caesar Octavianus now became Imperator Caesar Augustus. In Hanseatic History. Other honors carried more symbolic meaning (laurels placed on the door of his house; award of the corona civica for saving the lives of citizens; the Shield of Virtues erected in his honor) but they were no less significant for that: they helped establish Augustus's pre-eminent place in the state and craft the beginnings of an well written essay for college Augustan ideology. By means of this settlement, Augustus was simultaneously commander, leader, savior. [] In the essays history summer following the settlement, Augustus left Rome to tour Gaul and Spain. The journey kept him away from Rome until 24 BC--probably a wise choice on his part, to spanish 2 essay be out of the public eye while the new arrangements took root. While he was away his aides Agrippa and Maecenas supervised matters in Rome. The summer after his return, probably in June or July, the Second Constitutional Settlement was staged.
At around this time a conspiracy was unearthed and two principals, Fannius Caepio and Varro Murena, were executed. In the absence of evidence, scholarly debate has raged about the timing, aims, methods, and members of the conspiracy: was the Second Settlement a reaction to the conspiracy, or vice versa? Or were the essays in hanseatic history events unrelated? In the end, the conclusion has to common be left open, but the in hanseatic history case for the conspiracy's occurring after the settlement seems the for macbeth stronger, though any causative links between events remains little more than putative. The outline of the Second Settlement itself is clear enough, even if several details remain debatable. Augustus relinquished the consulship (which he had been monopolizing since 31 BC) and was only to take it up on two further occasions in in hanseatic history, the rest of essays volunteering experience his life, for dynastic reasons. In return, he received an empire-wide grant of proconsular power ( imperium proconsulare ) for five years. It is history debated whether this imperium was greater ( maius ) than that of any other governor or equal ( aequum ) to common it. Five decrees found in Cyrenaica, dated to the period 6-4 BC, show Augustus intervening in the internal affairs of this province. The implication is essays in hanseatic that his imperium overrode that of the governor on essays the spot (and so was maius ), though the possibility that it was co-extensive with it must also be allowed (making the imperium aequum ). Whatever the legal details, by virtue of this grant of imperium in 23 BC, he could intervene in the affairs of any province in the empire.
Unlike other governors, he was also given dispensation to retain his power within the essays history city limits of Rome (the pomerium ), probably for purely practical reasons: otherwise, every time he left the city, his proconsular power would need to be renewed. In relinquishing the consulship, Augustus lost certain powers and privileges within the city of Rome and spanish 2 essay, its polity (his proconsular power notwithstanding). These were now compensated for by a grant of tribunician power ( tribunicia potestas ), also for five years, that allowed him all the essays rights and privileges of a tribune of the essay on being proud to be people, without actually holding that office: he could summon the people, propose legislation, veto meetings and proposals, and so on. With both his tribunician power and essays in hanseatic, proconsular power, Augustus now had the ability to direct affairs in every wing of spanish 2 essay domestic and foreign administration. These two powers were long to remain the essays twin pillars of the Roman emperors' legal position. [] While the major settlements of 27 and 23 BC established the bases of Augustus's position, further refinements were necessary. As with the settlement of 27 BC, Augustus soon left Rome for the East (22-19 BC). Before he left, he was forced to essay on being to be an american refuse offers of the dictatorship or perpetual consulship pressed on him by the people, who appear to have completely missed the subtleties of the Second Settlement the year before.
Over the coming years, he received, piecemeal, some significant privileges and essays in hanseatic history, honors. In 23 BC, for instance, he was given the right to convene the senate whenever he saw fit ( ius primae relationis ). In 22 BC, he was appointed to oversee Rome's grain supply (for how long is spanish 2 essay unclear). In 19 , when he had returned from the East, he was given censorial powers for five years. When Lepidus finally died in 13 or 12 BC, Augustus became chief priest ( pontifex maximus ). Finally, in 2 BC, he was granted the title Father of his Country ( pater patriae ), a title of which he was immensely proud. Essays In Hanseatic History. It is not hard to see why, since the title placed Augustus in a relationship with the essay an american Roman state analogous to that of a paterfamilias over his charges: he was to essays history be in complete control of everything. In addition, there was his membership of all the colleges of priests, numerous symbolic privileges (e.g., immunity from taxes), and the matter of auctoritas . This personal quality, impossible to for macbeth translate into English with a single word, was a combination of authority and influence derived from one's social and political position, family, abilities, and achievements.
It was, most importantly, an informal virtue: it could not be voted to anyone by the senate or the people. In this way, the extent of Augustus's auctoritas reflected the extent and success of his life's work, and essays in hanseatic history, it helped him get a lot of business done without constantly invoking his legally-conferred powers. Augustus simply had to make known his preferences for matters to transpire accordingly, so that, for for macbeth instance, candidates for office whom he favored invariably got elected. Essays In Hanseatic History. No wonder he was proud to boast that he surpassed all in auctoritas . [] The complex edifice of the Augustan Principate was, at heart, a sham. But, like any successful sham, it was one that people could believe in. Above all, there was political genius in Augustus's slow and spanish 2 essay, careful acquisition of overarching authority in every area of public life. At every step of the way--from the oath of 32 BC through the constitutional settlements and essays history, the honors and privileges conferred upon him piecemeal--he could present himself as the passive partner. On all occasions, the senate and people of essays volunteering Rome voluntarily conferred powers, privileges, and honors on essays history him. He sought nothing for himself; he was no Caesar. Indeed, he often expressed reluctance to accept offices and honors that struck him as excessive, and occasionally he refused them outright.
In sharp contrast to Caesar, Augustus constantly had one eye on aristocratic sensitivities. Furthermore, none of find real ph.d his cardinal powers were conferred for life but, rather, for essays fixed periods of volunteering experience five or (later) ten years. Essays In Hanseatic History. That these powers were never rescinded when they came up for renewal is entirely beside the point: there was the questions sat illusion of choice. That is what mattered. The vocabulary Augustus chose to express his power, too, was a model of tact: leading citizen ( princeps ) not dictator, authoritative influence ( auctoritas ) not command ( imperium ). Throw into the equation his modest lifestyle, affable approachability, routine consultation of the essays in hanseatic history senate, and genuinely impressive work ethic, and essays, we have in Augustus one of the greatest and most skillfully manipulative politicians of any nation in any age. The Nature of the Principate and The Problem of the Succession. After Actium, Augustus moved on the succession problem quickly. He began to show signs of favor to his nephew, Marcellus. Essays History. He himself only had one natural child, Julia, his daughter by his second wife, Scribonia. The first sure sign of favor to Marcellus was his participation in Augustus's triple triumph of 29 BC.
In 25 BC, Marcellus was married to Julia, forming a closer family link with Augustus. The following year, Marcellus became aedile and, on Augustus's request, was granted the essays for macbeth privilege of sitting as an ex-praetor in the senate and of standing for the consulship ten years in advance of the essays in hanseatic history legal age. By 23 BC he was widely considered, in spanish 2 essay, Velleius's words, Augustus's successor in power ( successor potentiae ). Essays In Hanseatic. Then, a surprise. Augustus fell seriously ill in 23 BC. As he lay on what he thought was his deathbed, he handed an account of the state's resources to the consul Cn. Calpurnius Piso, and his signet ring to essays for macbeth Agrippa. The symbolic message was clear: Marcellus was too young; experience was yet preferred at the top.
Augustus recovered from his illness, but later that same year Marcellus fell ill and was not so fortunate. He was nineteen when he died and in hanseatic history, was entombed with all due pomp and common questions sat, ceremony in Augustus's family mausoleum. In Hanseatic History. [] The career of Marcellus, short though it was, already revealed the elements of Augustus's methods: he was to use family links (marriage or adoption) in conjunction with constitutional privileges (office-holding and the privilege of standing for office early) to indicate his successor. His inspiration appears to have been his personal experience: as Caesar had presented Octavius to the public at his triumphs of September 46 BC, so now did Augustus display Marcellus at his own triumphs in well essay, August 29 BC; as the essays in hanseatic senate had Octavius granted the right to stand for common questions the consulship ten years in advance of the in hanseatic legal age in 43 BC, so Augustus had the same right granted to Marcellus in 24 BC; and just as Caesar had bound Octavius to him by a familial link, so now did Augustus with Marcellus's marriage to Julia (although such political alliances through family ties had long been a staple of the Roman nobility). Each event had its precedent; it was their combination that was significant. [] Marcellus was soon replaced by Agrippa. Shortly before Marcellus's death, Agrippa had left for the East. In the essay face of Marcellus's earlier preferment, the sources abound with rumors of Agrippa's voluntary departure in high dudgeon or of history his forcible exile, but such speculations are demonstrably without merit. Agrippa had been favored when Augustus was ill in written, 23 BC and subsequently went East with a grant of imperium proconsulare , a share in Augustus's own powers. This is not what Augustus would have done with a man of whom he was suspicious or who had fallen in any way from favor.
Augustus had business in the East, to which he was shortly to attend personally, and Agrippa was doubtless sent ahead to pave the way. Maecenas, Augustus's other chief advisor and no friend of essays in hanseatic history Agrippa, is reported to essays have commented in history, 21 BC that Agrippa had now been raised so high that either Augustus must marry him to Julia or kill him. Augustus chose the former route. Julia was married to Agrippa in that year. Until his death in 12 BC, Agrippa was clearly intended to be Augustus's successor. Aside from his marriage to spanish 2 essay Julia, in 18 BC Agrippa's proconsular power was renewed and, more significantly, he received a share of tribunician power (renewed in 13 BC). [] By virtue of these powers and privileges, had anything happened to Augustus in the years 21-13 BC, Agrippa would have been ideally placed to take over the reins of government. Coins of the period 13-12 BC depict Agrippa as virtual co-emperor with Augustus, although the latter was always the senior partner. This straightforward interpretation of the situation in these years has been complicated by Augustus's treatment of Agrippa and Julia's sons, Gaius (born in 20 BC) and Lucius (born in 17 BC). Essays In Hanseatic History. When Lucius was born, Augustus adopted them both as his own sons and they became Gaius and Lucius Caesar.
A further complication is added when the ongoing careers of on being proud an american Augustus's stepsons, Tiberius and Drusus, who were also advanced over these years, are taken into consideration. The intent behind these labyrinthine machinations appears to have been to create a pool of eligible candidates, headed by a frontrunner. Essays. Any other princes as were advanced in the background are best considered as insurance against common essay sat fate or as indicators of Augustus's preferences for the third generation of the Principate. In this way, Agrippa was to succeed Augustus, but the history adoption of Gaius and Lucius signalled Augustus's desire that one of them succeed Agrippa (which one was to be preferred remains unclear, given subsequent events). Tiberius and Drusus, as imperial princes, can be expected to written essay have enjoyed high public profiles and earned various privileges, but they were very much on essays in hanseatic the backburner in these years. Notions of Regency (Agrippa over Gaius and Lucius) or paired succession (Gaius and Lucius, Tiberius and Drusus) proposed by modern scholars seem remoter possibilities. [] Augustus's vision for the succession can be seen in action again in 12 BC, when Agrippa died. Julia, now widowed a second time, was married to Tiberius the essays volunteering experience following year.
Tiberius was Augustus's stepson and the most senior and experienced of the secondary princes in the imperial house. As such, he was a natural choice. Not long afterward, Tiberius left for essays in hanseatic campaigns in Germany and Pannonia, possibly with a grant of proconsular imperium . In 7 BC he entered his second consulship and the following year his position was made plain when he received a large commission in the East and a grant of find real ph.d thesis on financial management administrati tribunician power. History. In short, between 12 and 6 BC Tiberius was upgraded to take Agrippa's place in Augustus's scheme and was installed to be Augustus's successor. Proud An American. But it was to be a rocky road indeed that led to his eventual succession in AD 14.
In 6 BC Tiberius unexpectedly retired to Rhodes, despite his prominent public position. Augustus, apparently angered by Tiberius's action, had little choice (Drusus, Tiberius's brother had died in history, Germany in essay on being proud an american, 9 BC). He appears to have relied on his increasingly robust health to see his adopted sons Gaius and in hanseatic, Lucius Caesar to their maturity. But fate intervened once more and both young men died, Lucius in AD 2 and Gaius two years after that. In a burst of dynastic activity in June of AD 4, Tiberius was rehabilitated and adopted by Augustus, as was Agrippa Postumus (the youngest child of Julia and Agrippa); Tiberius was constrained to adopt his nephew Germanicus . Again, debate has swirled around these arrangements but, following the suggestions made above, it is probably best to spanish 2 essay avoid notions of regency or paired succcession and essays in hanseatic history, see here an attempt by Augustus to re-establish a pool of princes from experience which to draw candidates, with Tiberius as the favored successor and Germanicus to come behind him. The adoption of Agrippa Postumus remains puzzling, but he was still only a teenager at the time and the move may have been intended only to secure his prominence in future succession plans. Germanicus , twenty years old at essays in hanseatic, the time of his adoption by proud, Tiberius , was clearly the in hanseatic frontrunner for the third generation of the Principate. Through him, also, Augustus could hope for a Julian heir to the throne, but it is far from clear whether this remote consideration played any decisive role in Augustus's thinking. [] The succession issue was not a happy one for the imperial house and carried in its train some domestic tragedies.
Aside from the deaths of the ph.d thesis management administrati various princes, Augustus banished his own daughter Julia in 2 BC and her daughter, also named Julia, in AD 8. In AD 6-7 Agrippa Postumus was disinherited and in hanseatic, banished to the small island of Planasia, only to be murdered shortly after Augustus's death. The banishment of essay on being proud Julia the Elder is emblematic of this group of events. Julia's marriage to Tiberius had not been successful and she appears to have sought solace in the arms of various noblemen and essays in hanseatic, equestrians. Spanish 2 Essay. In 2 BC her indiscretions were brought to in hanseatic history Augustus's attention and, enraged, he banished her to the island of Pandateria. Find Real Ph.d On Financial Administrati. She never returned to Rome.
The sources unanimously ascribe Julia's fate to her licentiousness and immorality, but modern scholars have rightly questioned this presentation and seen instead dynastic scheming behind Julia's actions and subsequent banishment. Whatever the actual degree of Julia's political acumen, the informal and allusive nature of the succession system itself was the root cause of her demise. For, in the Augustan system, an imperial princess who had been married to no less than three indicated favorites (Marcellus, Agrippa, and Tiberius ) and in hanseatic, who then brought outsiders into her bed was also bringing them into the heart of the dynasty. That could not be tolerated. That Augustus interpreted his daughter's misdeeds in political terms, at essays, least in part, is suggested by the trial for treason of one of essays Julia's lovers, Iullus Antonius, and his subsequent execution or suicide; others of her lovers were banished. The same can be said for the fall of Agrippa Postumus and then of essays Julia the Younger. However murky the details in essays in hanseatic, each case, they can all be seen as victims of the to be Augustan succession system. []
In all, then, the succession problem was a difficult one for in hanseatic history Augustus, and his solutions only perpetuated it for all future emperors. Despite the internal difficulties engendered by the issue, Augustus was keen to present a united image of the imperial house to the populace. This is best illustrated by the Altar of the Augustan Peace ( Ara Pacis Augustae ), dedicated in essay, January, 9 BC, and laden with symbolic significance largely outside the in hanseatic purview of this biography. For our current purposes, most important is the presentation to the people, on essays the south frieze, of the imperial family--women and children included--as a corporate entity. The message of dynastic harmony and the promise of future stability emanating from the imperial house is palpable. The reality, as we have just seen, was rather different. Augustus and essays in hanseatic, the Empire I: the Army. Augustus completed the thesis on financial management administrati ongoing professionalization of the essays Roman military by questions sat, establishing a force of essays history 28 standing legions (three were to be lost in Germany in AD 9), made up of volunteer recruits. Well Essay. For the citizen soldiers of the essays in hanseatic history legions, service was for a prescribed period (first 16, then 20 years), on a regular wage, and volunteering experience, with fixed rewards upon discharge. After 14 BC, land grants were discontinued in favor of cash pension payments; such payments were funded, after AD 6, by essays in hanseatic history, a new public treasury (the aerarium militare ). For the first time, military service became a career choice in and of itself. Essay On Being To Be. Augustus also created a non-citizen wing of the army (corresponding to the Republican era's allies and extraordinarii ). These auxiliary troops were formed into cohorts of infantry and wings ( alae ) of essays cavalry, usually 500 or 1000 strong, sometimes under their own commanders, sometimes under a Roman officer (an ex-centurion or tribune).
Under Augustus, auxiliary units were mostly raised as needed and disbanded when the campaign(s) ended; some units were incorporated into essay for college, the new permanent force, on terms of service similar to those for the legionaries. Augustus also regularized the organization and terms of service in essays history, the Roman navy and well written, created the praetorian guard, a personal force which he discreetly and tactfully billeted in townships around Rome. [] Augustus was careful to channel the loyalties of this new professional army solely in his direction. The troops' loyalty to Augustus was assured by their taking a personal oath of loyalty to him and by his role as their sole paymaster and guarantor of their rewards on discharge. In short, he was their patron.
The army's commanders on-the-ground were handpicked legates of Augustus; its campaign commanders were often the likes of Agrippa, Tiberius , or Gaius Caesar, that is, members of Augustus's own family or immediate circle. He also kept the army busy in major campaigns in Spain, the history Alpine regions, along the Danube and Rhine rivers, across the Rhine in well essay for college, Germany, and in numerous small-scale actions all along the empire's frontiers. Where active campaigns were not prosecuted, as in essays in hanseatic history, Gaul or in the East, the well essay for college army was used as a means of aiding political settlements (as in the return of the Parthian eagles in 20 BC or the meeting of C. Caesar and the Parthians on an island in the Euphrates in AD 2) or as a garrison over local populations (as in Gaul). While Augustus did not go so far as to station the legions along the in hanseatic history frontier as a defensive garrison force (as was to happen in later ages), he at least removed them from the center of real ph.d management power and began the essays history process of keeping them in the vicinity of the frontiers. Although Augustus appears to ph.d management some scholars to have been aiming at establishing scientific frontiers along the Rhine/Elbe and Danube lines, the essays history whole issue of his foreign policy--indeed, whether even such a policy existed--remains most unclear.
For the scientific frontiers view to be true, certain problematic assumptions are requisite, not the least concerning the Romans' cartographic capabilities and their appreciation of geographic realities well beyond their immediate purview; it is also questionable to what degree the administration of the empire in general adhered to clearly conceived policy on anything, rather than reacting ad hoc as circumstances and local conditions dictated. Essay On Being An American. On the whole, then, we should probably avoid notions of Roman imperial policy on the model of modern national policies. In Hanseatic History. One of the chief political values of Augustus's campaigns was that it kept his new professional army busy--idle trained killers can be a somewhat destabilizing element in society--and afforded him considerable personal military glory, which further reinforced his claim to the loyalty of the troops. [] The importance to Augustus, as well as to the state, of his monopolization of army loyalties is revealed in spanish 2 essay, two suggestive incidents in 27 BC, when the Augustan order was still in its infancy. At this delicate time, M. In Hanseatic History. Licinius Crassus, grandson of the great Late Republican magnate, raised a serious problem for Augustus. As governor of Macedonia he had undertaken successful campaigns south of the well written essay Danube in in hanseatic history, 29-28 BC and had personally killed the enemy leader in battle. In 27 BC, then, he was awarded a triumph but he went further: he claimed the ancient honor of spolia opima (the most honorable spoils), awarded to well written essay for college a Roman commander who had slain his counterpart with his own hand. These honors, involving the dedication of the essays in hanseatic enemy commander's captured panoply to Jupiter Feretrius, had only on being proud, been earned on essays three prior occasions in all of Roman history.
Since Crassus's claim to the spolia opima would have raised Crassus into the uppermost echelons of military glory, it had the potential to confuse the soldiers' loyalty toward Augustus. So Augustus blocked the claim on a technicality. Essays About Volunteering. Crassus held his triumph and promptly disappears from our records. History. (It is common essay sat unlikely that he was killed but, rather, that his public profile died a death in the face of Augustus's displeasure, a good example, if true, of the workings of auctoritas .) Not long afterward, another governor proved problematic. C. Cornelius Gallus had been appointed the first prefect of Egypt on its annexation in 30 BC. Like Crassus, he had embarked on campaigns to surpress revolts and to attack neighboring people. He then celebrated his successes with statues of himself and in hanseatic, bragging inscriptions, one of which has survived. Enraged, Augustus let it be known that he no longer considered Gallus his friend. Charges were immediately brought and proposals laid that Gallus be convicted in absentia , exiled, and his property given to find ph.d Augustus.
His social status and political career in ruins, his very life perhaps in in hanseatic, danger, Gallus committed suicide (possibly in volunteering experience, 26 BC). Both of these men had behaved fully within the boundaries of republican precedent but had failed utterly to appreciate a fundamental rule of the new order: there was to be no military glory but Augustus's. In contrast, Agrippa, for so long Augustus's right-hand man, repeatedly refused honors and triumphs granted to him; all his victories were celebrated by Augustus. [] Augustus and the Empire II: Administration. In the sphere of external affairs, many of the army's conquests were formed into new provinces, especially along the south shore of the Danube (Moesia, Pannonia, Noricum, and Raetia) and the Alps (Alpes Cottiae and Maritimae).
In the East and in Mauretania in North Africa, client kingdoms and principalities were allowed to exist, sometimes in very complex arrangements, as with the history Tetrarchs in common questions sat, Palestine or the numerous lesser kingdoms that dotted the interior and eastern reaches of Asia Minor. From 27 BC onward these provinces were divided into those that fell into the vast provincia of Augustus (the imperial provinces) and those that were retained by the senate and people (the senatorial or public provinces; see above, From Octavian to Augutus: A New Order Established). When the disposition of the provinces is examined (as it stood on essays history Augustus's death in AD 14), it shows that the imperial territories outnumber the public ones by a factor of almost two, and that all but one of the essays about volunteering empire's twenty-five legions then in service fell under the emperor's command. In Hanseatic. Further, the Cyrenaica decrees reveal the emperor making decisions about the internal operation of this, a public province. Such interference on Augustus's part was legitimated by the improved imperium proconsulare granted him in the settlement of spanish 2 essay 23 BC and brings into question any notions of joint rule by history, senate and real ph.d thesis management administrati, princeps (so-called dyarchy). Ultimately, all the provinces were Augustus's concern. []
Overall, it is fair to say that the provinces, whether public or imperial, benefited enormously from Augustus's reign. Not only had he brought them peace, he also brought them good government. Legates in essays in hanseatic history, imperial provinces were appointed by Augustus for periods of three years or more depending on proud an american local conditions, whereas proconsuls in the public provinces continued to rotate annually. The men varied in rank from senators (proconsuls, usually of praetorian rank, in public provinces; legates of praetorian or consular rank in imperial ones) to equites (governing as prefects, as in essays history, Egypt and some of the smaller, unarmed provinces). Whatever their status, under the new order governors had no reason to extort from their provinces the huge sums of money that Republican-era proconsuls and propraetors had used to bankroll their domestic political careers, since the success of those careers now depended less on victory at the polls and more on the emperor's favor. Essay. Indeed, extortion in the provinces could be positively dangerous, as it raised suspicions about the nature of one's ultimate ambitions. These strictures applied no less in the public than in the imperial provinces, since all governors were now answerable to a single source of authority in a way they had not been under the Republic. This does not mean that rapacious governors entirely disappeared as a breed but that, for the most part--the disappointments of in hanseatic history Gallus and Crassus aside--Augustus's gubernatorial appointments were sound.
We hear of no major failings in the management of the provinces during his reign and certainly nothing on essays about volunteering experience a par with the rapacious activities of the likes of essays Caesar or Sulla under the Republic. Augustus, by virtue of proconsular power, could also intervene directly in any provincial dispute, as he did famously in Cyrenaica. Hardly surprising, then, is the fact that of on being to be all the emperors, Augustus's image is the most commonly found in the provinces, even long after his death. The remarkable period of peace and in hanseatic, prosperity ushered in by Augustus's reign is known not only as the Pax Romana but also as the Pax Augusta . Essays. [] Augustus, as the essays in hanseatic history protector and guardian of Roman tradition, also sought to essays volunteering inculcate a return to that tradition by means of legislation: by new laws passed at my instigation, I brought back those practices of our ancestors that were passing away in our age ( RG 8.5). Thus, for instance, he passed laws limiting public displays of extravagance (so-called sumptuary legislation) in the manner of the old Republican senate, and he attempted through marriage regulations to put a cap on divorces and in hanseatic history, punish childlessness and essay on being proud, adultery among the elite.
He also reinforced the traditional social hierarchy, making sure that everyone knew their place in essays in hanseatic, it. Minimum property qualifications for membership of the upper orders were reinforced, and status symbols for all the classes, especially the spanish 2 essay amorphous equestrians, clearly established. The convergence of this sort of legislation is illustrated by the series of laws pertaining to essays in hanseatic freed slaves, passed between 17 BC and AD 4. In the spanish 2 essay first place, the numbers of slaves that could be informally manumitted or freed in wills was restricted in proportion to the total number of slaves owned. This is a piece of sumptuary regulation, limiting overly extravagant displays of essays in hanseatic wealth and generosity in public. Second, informally freed slaves were placed into a special class of quasi-citizenship termed Junian Latinity that was capable of being upgraded to full citizenship only essay on being to be, after the Junians had proved themselves worthy; one way of achieving worthiness was to have children. In Hanseatic. Such regulations, then, encapsulated the Augustan attitudes toward public extravagance, maintenance of the social hierarchy, and marriage and reproduction. In his private life, Augustus fell short of his own ideals (witness the turmoil engendered in his family by find real ph.d thesis administrati, adultery and infidelities of all sorts), but the thrust of his social legislation was less to regulate individuals' private behavior than to maintain the proper outward appearance of dignitas and decency that Augustus felt had been lost during the Late Republic. In Hanseatic. As such, it pertained to the ruling classes of the state and hardly at all affected the commoner on the street. [] Finally, there is the issue of the worship of Augustus. The imperial cult evolved gradually over many centuries, and it has been long recognized that ruler worship extended back well before Roman times in the eastern Mediterranean.
In the East, then, the worship of about volunteering Augustus as a god commenced not long after Actium. Augustus, reticent in this regard, often rejected divine honors outright or insisted that his worship be coupled with that of Rome. He probably had an eye on Caesar's fate in so acting. The situation in the West, however, was more difficult. In Rome itself there could be no question of Augustus being worshipped as a living god, which would go against the grain of the Principate. In any case, he was already the son of a god and the revered one (Augustus). A compromise solution appears to essays in hanseatic history have been to common questions have his will ( numen ) or essence ( genius ) recognized as divine. In Italy and out in essays in hanseatic, the western provinces Augustus did not actively block direct worship, and two major cult centers were established at Lugdunum in Gaul and Cologne on written essay the Rhine with altars at each place to Rome and Augustus, maintained by officials drawn from the local elite. In communities all across the West, in fact, altars and temples to Rome and Augustus and to Augustus himself are attested, all staffed by locals. Such cult centers therefore acted not only to essays history promote unity in the previously barbarous western provinces and to direct loyalties accordingly, but they also facilitated the assimilation of for macbeth local populations into a Roman way of life. []
The Augustan literary scene was also exceptionally vibrant. Essays. This is the era of some of Rome's most famous and influential writers, including Vergil, Horace, Ovid, Propertius, and Tibullus in poetry, and essays, Livy in essays in hanseatic, prose. Vergil, in particular, crafted a new national epic for the Romans in the Aeneid , which quickly came to volunteering replace Ennius's Annales as the poem every schoolchild learned by heart. This great flowering of literary activity was generated by essays history, the development of literary circles of essays volunteering patronage, which had been mostly in abeyance since the in hanseatic second century BC. The most famous literary, indeed artistic, patron of his day was C. Maecenas, a close associate of Augustus from the on being to be an american very beginning but one who never played an active role in in hanseatic, politics (in contrast to Agrippa). Something of a bon vivant , he actively supported the essays careers of Vergil and essays, Horace, for instance, until his death in 8 BC.
Another circle formed around M. Written. Valerius Messalla Corvinus, who promoted the careers of Tibullus and Ovid. Essays In Hanseatic. For the essays for macbeth historian the most intriguing question such literary circles prompt is the degree to which the political and cultural sentiments expressed by these writers were officially directed, and so in in hanseatic, effect provided propaganda for the Augustan regime. Essay Questions Sat. When all the evidence is weighed, there can be no question of a state-controlled literature (on the model of media in modern totalitarian states) but there may have been encouragement from the top to express the in hanseatic correct view coupled, no doubt, with genuine gratitude and relief on essays about volunteering the part of the essays in hanseatic history patrons and writers alike that Augustus had restored peace and stability to public affairs. In this way, Vergil's Eclogues and Georgics can reflect the spanish 2 essay hope Augustus brought for a restoration of peace to the Italian countryside, while the Republican sentiments of Livy's history could be so pronounced that Augustus jokingly termed him my Pompeian. The point is that both authors flourished under the regime. [] The inscription entitled The Achievements of the Divine Augustus ( Res Gestae Divi Augustae ; usually abbreviated RG ) remains a remarkable piece of evidence deriving from Augustus's reign. The fullest copy of essays it is the bilingual Greek and Latin version carved into the walls of the Temple of Rome and well essay, Augustus at Ancyra in Galatia (for this reason the RG used to be commonly referred to as the Monumentum Ancyranum ). Other evidence, however, demonstrates that the in hanseatic original was inscribed on two bronze pillars that flanked the entrance to the Mausoleum of Augustus in Rome. Essays About. The inscription remains the only first-person summary of any Roman emperor's political career and, as such, offers invaluable insights into the Augustan regime's public presentation of itself. Essays History. [] In looking back on well the reign of Augustus and essays in hanseatic history, its legacy to the Roman world, its longevity ought not to be overlooked as a key factor in its success. People had been born and reached middle age without knowing any form of government other than the Principate.
Had Augustus died earlier (in 23 BC, for instance), matters may have turned out very differently. The attrition of the civil wars on the old Republican aristocracy and the longevity of Augustus, therefore, must be seen as major contributing factors in the transformation of the Roman state into a monarchy in these years. Augustus's own experience, his patience, his tact, and his great political acumen also played their part. All of these factors allowed him to put an end to common questions sat the chaos of the Late Republic and re-establish the Roman state on a firm footing. He directed the future of the empire down many lasting paths, from the existence of essays in hanseatic history a standing professional army stationed at or near the frontiers, to the dynastic principle so often employed in spanish 2 essay, the imperial succession, to the embellishment of the capital at the emperor's expense. Augustus's ultimate legacy, however, was the essays in hanseatic peace and well written, prosperity the empire was to enjoy for the next two centuries under the system he initiated. His memory was enshrined in the political ethos of the Imperial age as a paradigm of the good emperor; although every emperor adopted his name, Caesar Augustus, only a handful earned genuine comparison with him. Brunt and history, J.M. Moore [Oxford, 1967]). Fragments of the biography of Augustus by Nicolaus of Damascus (fl. ca. Spanish 2 Essay. 20 BC) are especially valuable, since this work is widely accepted as preserving elements of Augustus's lost De Vita Sua (covering the years down to essays 25 BC; Suet. Aug . 1-18 appears also to be based on this autobiography). The surviving text of Nicolaus, however, only treats Octavian's life down to the raising of his private legions in about experience, 44 BC (for editions with English translations and essays, notes, see J. Octavian seems to essays in hanseatic history have arrived in Italy in early April or late March: Cicero, in a letter from Astura dated 11 April, inquired of Atticus how it went ( Att . 14.5.3 = SB 359). Note that the influential Caesarian L. Munatius Plancus had taken note of the young Octavius prior to Caesar's murder, so the young man had not gone entirely unnoticed by the elite; see Cic. Augustus's own summary of on being to be an american this phase of essays history his career ( RG 1.1) is restricted to essays about experience the simple and tendentious assertion he successfully championed the liberty of the republic when it was oppressed by the tyranny of a faction. [] Technically, however, the adoption was not made official until October/November 43 BC. In Hanseatic. That is why, it seems, Cicero comments that, when he met Octavian at Puteoli on 22 April, 44 BC, his followers call him Caesar, but Philippus [Octavian's stepfather] does not, so neither do I ( Att . 14.12.2 = SB 366); the Liberator M. Junius Brutus also refers to Octavian as Octavius (Cic. Ad Brut . 17.5-6, 25.1, 2, 7, 8, 11; dated June and July 43 BC). In contrast, L. Munatius Plancus, a Caesarian, calls Octavian Caesar in letters roughly contemporary with Brutus's (e.g., Cic. Fam . Essays Volunteering Experience. 10.23.6, 10.24.4-8). The political importance of the name was beyond doubt to essays in hanseatic contemporaries. [] Cicero first met Octavian in Naples on 19 April, 44 BC, one day after Octavian had arrived in essay to be an american, the city ( Att . 14.10.3 = SB 364).
A few days later, on 22 April, he had decided that Octavian's influence on events could not be good, since his supporters were threatening death to the Liberators ( Att . 14.12.2 = SB 366). [] For his part, Cicero paid little attention to Octavius, at least initially: on 12 April, 44 BC he wrote to Atticus ( Att . 14.6.1 = SB 360), As for Octavius -- it's neither here not there. [] Appian ( B. Civ . 3.14-21) puts windy speeches into both their mouths: Octavian asks for his inheritance, Antony refuses by claiming the essays in hanseatic money is tied up in litigation, largely spent already, or not yet counted. In contrast, Dio (45.5.3) merely comments that Antony insulted Octavian, despite the latter's deference and failure to demand his inheritance. Regardless of the details, in both accounts the meeting was not successful. C. Matius, an obscure but affluent Caesarian, saw to the games at Octavian's request (Cic. Fam . 11.28.6). [] See App.
B. Civ . 3.27, 30; Dio 45.9.3. [] All of this took place in October and November 44 BC, as Cicero's letters make plain ( Att . 16.8.1-2 = SB 418; Fam . Essays. 12.23.2). Needless to say, it was also to the political benefit of the Liberators and their supporters (Cicero among them) to keep the Caesarian leadership quarrelling. Essays in Hanseatic History: The King s Lynn Symposium 1998: Paul
How a Berkeley undergrad secured fulltime offers at essays history, Navigant and FTI Consulting. The Life as a Consultant series is for macbeth back! We have several great interviews queued up from firms including McKinsey, Oliver Wyman, and essays history more. Our guest today is an essays for macbeth, undergraduate student at a large state university. Essays In Hanseatic History? He managed to land 2 fulltime job offers: at FTI Consulting within their Restructuring Practice, and at Navigant Consulting within their Disputes and Investigations practice. Let’s jump right into it!
Please note, the personal views and opinions expressed are strictly those of the essay on being proud to be, interviewee and do not reflect the views of the interviewee’s employers or affiliated entities. For the benefit of readers, can you tell us about your background? Basic background about myself. I was born in raised in history, California and come from find ph.d, a fairly traditional Chinese American family. I’m currently a senior at UC-Berkeley. I’m a business and economics double major and because my business program has a good reputation, my school is considered a target, especially with its proximity to SF and all businesses around Silicon Valley. I would say I’m an above average student with a 3.6 GPA and essays in hanseatic history have been involved in many EC activities including leadership positions within community service organization, campus investment organization, and one of the campuses main student Christian groups. I would say that I’ve been able to keep everything in perspective in college and have been able to maintain a good balance with academics, EC (extra-curriculars), and just enjoying college.
I have many interests including, all type of sports (basketball), outdoors (snowboarding, longboarding), play my fair share of video games now and essay sat then, and also am a big movie buff. In terms of academics, I came into history, college not knowing what I wanted to do at all. Eventually decided that business fit me well, especially the competitive nature of the program allowed me to for macbeth work hard to essays in hanseatic stay at the top of my class. Eventually became interested in spanish 2 essay, finance after taking more classes and learning more about the business world through my various internships and contacts. All in all, I’m just an average college student who tries to history have fun, work hard, and stay productive. As for my previous work experience and previous jobs, I really had no experience in HS besides working at a local tutoring center. I got my big break after freshman year from a family relative with the written, opportunity to work for Ernst and essays Young in Hong Kong for a summer internship.
It was a great experience and essays definitely a result of networking. Essays In Hanseatic History? I’ve also had an internship at essay for college, a local media consulting startup in SF. I basically pitched to local companies about how they can better their business through various online avenues. This past summer, I had the opportunity to work at Morgan Stanley in NY in their middle office “Finance” division. I worked within the essays history, Risk Controllers group and overall enjoyed the city and summer experience a lot more than the work itself. Spanish 2 Essay? I was able to interview for the position through a program called SEO, which is a great way for certain students to obtain summer internships (contact me for more info).
In NY I really built on my interest in finance and it was a great launching point for where I’ll be working next year. If our guest hadn’t “sold himself” to SF media companies, he wouldn’t have had one of the in hanseatic history, strongest and most entrepreneurial experiences on his resume. On Being Proud To Be? Get out essays, there and well written for college sell yourself! In addition, programs like SEO are great if you qualify – look high and wide for such nontraditional opportunities. Aside from Navigant Consulting and in hanseatic FTI Consulting, did you recruit for other firms and/or industries? What was your experience there? I definitely recruited for many other firms and experience industries during my job search last semester. I was fortunate enough to have some solid work experience, a pretty good GPA and resume, along with a good grasp of essays history, networking so during recruiting season I had my hands full. Essays Experience? Originally, I really had no idea what I wanted to do, even after my summer MS, but as recruiting went along I soon realized it wasn’t really a problem because I would have to spread out my efforts across the many industries and firms recruiting at my school.
I was just lucky that my school is a target and thus has many opportunities for me to network with firms. Because of the essays history, shape of the well for college, economy and everyone not knowing how their company would be impacted, the recruiting season was brutal for essays, the senior business class, even at spanish 2 essay, Berkeley. The stories of all the major bulge-bracket banks posting fulltime listings on our OCR (on campus recruiting) website yet cutting half the positions in the end were definitely true. Many times, the firms would interview students just to maintain relationships with the school without even intending on hiring anybody. In the end, I ended applying to over 50 positions across the finance and consulting industries. Essays History? I probably had about ph.d thesis 20 first round interviews and in hanseatic finally ended up with 4 offers (not including my fulltime offer at Morgan Stanley). I decided early on that I didn’t want to return to real on financial management administrati Morgan Stanley because of the in hanseatic, level of work done in the mid office (can elaborate more later). The overall recruiting experience was much like you would expect it to be.
Apply online, wait for reply, attend info sessions and essay questions sat get to know the people, prep for first round, wait for second round, and repeat for all the firms that you were interested in. It definitely took up a huge chunk of time last semester and would not want to do it again if I had the choice. I have many stories to tell about fulltime recruiting at school and am open to essays in hanseatic history any questions. Ultimately, I found that I would really enjoy consulting more than traditional finance (IBD/IB related work) which is probably what shined through during my interviews etc – finally landing the offers, 3 with consulting firms and 1 with a big 4 firm in their structured finance practice. Essays For Macbeth? The toughest part of the whole process was making sure you prepped for everything, whether it be an info session or interview. Motivating yourself to in hanseatic history get out and attend all the events , stepping out of your comfort zone to talk to common essay sat people, and history just showing genuine interest in the positions being offered were all essential for spanish 2 essay, any job hunter in our country’s worst job market in probably 20+ years. You should not miss any career or recruiting events. It may seem basic – but I’m willing to bet every single reader has at some point said “Nah…I’ll skip this one. Just feeling [insert one of the following here: tired/lazy/too busy/it won’t matter that much] today.” FTI and Navigant are both diversified consulting firms and essays are not typical strategy consulting firms.
What attracted you to FTI? Navigant? Definitely cliche, but the work and the people. To Be? The work seemed to be challenging, stimulating, client focused, and overall just more exciting than valuing companies all day or auditing financial statements. The people at these firms were definitely very down to earth, receptive, and I could imagine myself working with them . I did recruit for some of the typical strategy consulting firms but overall, my background in essays in hanseatic history, finance really led me to FTI and Navigant and about volunteering experience probably turned off some of the recruiter from the typical strategy consulting firms. Also, because my resume was more diversified and not as consulting oriented, it probably made it much harder to get interviews with the typical strategy consulting firms – especially since it was really the “hot” thing for the top students now that banking was really going down the pipes.
I know countless people who switched over to consulting from IBD because of the turmoil and huge position cuts by the top banks . Essays In Hanseatic History? Overall, I’m very happy with how everything turned out and am looking forward to the finance based consulting work I’ll be involved in next year. Tell us what you know about recruiting for FTI – the proud, interview process, the people. The recruiting process for history, FTI is about basically the typical process of attending their on campus information session. Showing your interest by talking to the people and getting a good idea of the in hanseatic history, work/firm/people. Next you apply online through your campus career center (or their website/recruiter’s email). Attend the first round and if you make it back to on financial administrati the final rounds, about in hanseatic history 3 weeks later, you go to their office in SF. Depending on which position you are applying for thesis administrati, you will interview with the history, people in about experience, that specific practice. I had 3 separate interviews for the second round in addition to a group case interview. This consisted of an history, actual case the group was working on common sat at the essays, time.
You split into groups to analyze the case and then present in 1 hour to the entire team. This was definitely a nerve wracking part of the interview because you don’t know how you’re doing and in the end one mistake could mean the difference between an offer or nothing. Lastly, there was also a written test which consisted of basic knowledge of accounting and corporate finance – all skills which would be needed for a starting consultant. Throughout the recruiting process, the people were very welcoming. They all seemed very down to essay for college earth and answered all the questions I had. The main head of recruiting contact was helpful and friendly, really making all the candidates feel at home throughout the interviews. I think you really get a feel of the people just by attending a firm’s info session and observing how they interact with each other as well as potential candidates . At FTI, the in hanseatic history, people were relaxed, seemed happy to written essay for college mingle, and really enjoyed talking about their daily jobs. It’s fairly easy to tell if someone likes their job or not and that is an important distinction to pay attention to when recruiting for essays in hanseatic history, any firm. Extremely important point. Observe how the consultants/bankers are with each other, not just how they talk to you. These observations will give you a ton of insight about their company culture.
Tell us what you know about recruiting for for macbeth, Navigant – the interview process, the people. The process for Navigant was very similar but overall less intense. The people were more laidback and tried to bring a more collegial, younger and community based feel for in hanseatic history, their firm (and the general recruiting process). Essays About Volunteering Experience? The people had similar backgrounds and positions as FTI and Navigant are essentially competitors in essays in hanseatic history, the same general space. The interviews had the well written essay for college, same structure but were less technical and in hanseatic history didn’t include a group case or written portion. Questions? I think I went through 5 second round interviews and had a great lunch (which is always nice on essays history interview days). All in all, it was a very hard decision at questions, the end of the recruiting season and in hanseatic history I am definitely going to stay in touch with the people I met at Navigant in the future. You went to spanish 2 essay a large public university where there were many applicants. How did you differentiate yourself during the recruiting process? I feel like I was able to differentiate myself by networking at in hanseatic history, all the events that FTI and Navigant held at spanish 2 essay, school and just my meeting the people at the events. It is definitely better to get to know 1-2 people very well vs. just introducing yourself to everyone in the room.
At career fairs and essays history info sessions, you are always standing with a big group of prospective candidates/students and in order to really stand out you need to spanish 2 essay do your research (prepping) in order to essays in hanseatic history ask intelligent questions and overall just form a connection with the employees at the firms. Of course it is also very critical that you work on your interviewing skills and just make a good impression overall. I feel that by getting to know the people who attend the info sessions/career fairs, they really put in a good word for you if you are genuinely interested and show that you can be a real asset to their company . You want to make yourself more than a resume and on being to be an american name, and the best way to do that is to connect by essays in hanseatic history asking questions, talking, and questions sat just being an in hanseatic, enthusiastic candidate (in addition to the basics of spanish 2 essay, prepping for interviews, company info, academics, etc). Any last words of advice for prospective consultants? Well, for me I’m really still a student and haven’t entered the fulltime consulting world yet, but really I recommend exploring what interests you by joining an on history campus consulting group or just reading material that is consulting related. I think the spanish 2 essay, most important thing for someone looking to enter consulting is to essays in hanseatic network and about experience talk to people who are in the industry currently, get a good perspective on the work and the people, and ultimately decide how you can prepare for those consulting interviews when fulltime recruiting comes around. The key is persistence, genuine interest (enthusiasm), and having an internal motivation to get that job. Last question that I ask all interviewees. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years hopefully I’ll either by finishing my first year at bschool or in my first year at a great program called Teach For America.
Because I’ve been heavily involved with education and community service in school I’ve known several people who have participated in essays, the program and essays volunteering had only amazing things to say. As for bschool, I would like to stay on essays history the west coast but we’ll see if my interests change in the future. How should readers get in touch with you? They can get in touch with me by emailing truzilla (at) spoofee (dot) com. I would definitely like to be a resource for your readers and I look forward to seeing my own insight on your site! Are you a current consultant or someone who recruited successfully? Interested in being interviewed ? Please get in spanish 2 essay, touch to be featured in the Life as a Consultant series.
Great article and interview. I interned at Navigant in their Disputes and Investigations, which is another way of saying litigation consulting. FYI is largely similar. Another well regarded litigation consulting firm is Cornerstone Research. The thing that needs to be emphasized is essays in hanseatic history that litigation consulting is VERY different from strategy/management consulting. You don’t consult with managers at a company.
You consult with lawyers. The bread and butter of a litigation consulting company is preparing damage calculations for trial. Also, while most of the work strategy consultants do is in Powerpoint decks, DI is more about contracts analysis, forensic accounting, damage valuations, so a lot of stuff in Excel and common statistical packages. Essays In Hanseatic? I’d imagine the work is more similar to Big 4 audit than management consulting. Indeed many of the managing directors at Navigant LA were CPAs and Big 4 alumni. Also, litigation consultants do not travel frequently. However, Navigant LA did have an investigations department that worked with the SEC.
That did see some travel onsite similar to audit setups. However, it is interesting that yo are going into the Restructuring practice at for macbeth, FTI. I do have some former colleagues now at JonesAlvarez, which is also a well regarded restructuring house. So I think the skillsets may align. Very interesting article nonetheless even tho it was light on content on what work would be like. Understandable as it is more about recruiting. BTW I have a friend in Beijing working for in hanseatic history, Accenture who has an intersting story about doubt an internal transfer abroad from the USA. if interested in common questions sat, doing a similar nterview would be happy to make the intro. Thanks for that great comment. It’s a great point – litigation consulting is very different (both with respect to lifestyle and work) than strategy consulting.
thanks for the great info. This site is great and I recommend it to all of my friends. Could you make a post on what undergraduate summer interns at M/B/B can do before their programs commence? I’m fortunate enough to have snabbed a position and would like to do some reading or work to in hanseatic history prepare myself, if there is on being to be an american anything that I can do. Thanks and I look forward to reading your future posts! holly, thanks for the comment! anything you can do to help get the word out is much appreciated. i actually wrote a lengthy article about the 7 things interns (and new fulltime consultants) can do to before their job starts: hope that answers your question. dude i dont know about navigant and essays in hanseatic fti, both are like third tier. how about find ph.d posting about getting into pegasus, mars co. or huron. they are a bit better on the name scale. anyway, stay ballin!
You mean the Huron that just had an embarrassing and incompetent accounting mix up that led to a share price drop of $44 to 20 in 1 day? Oh yea that’s where its at. yea, i would not gloat if i got offers from fti or navigant. i would kill myself before working there – go volunteer something significant, don’t waste your life counting numbers or worse, making binders. absolutely rancid huron trolling. Great post, really helpful! I think one of the most important messages we should get is “be proactive, do not seat and wait for a job to fall at your door, use every chance you have to meet your objective”. Anyway my question is another one: as you said, you spent lots of time doing interviews, and essays just a few of the first rounds led to a second one.
I supposed this, but now I had the final check. Now I am currently working full time, but I would like to spanish 2 essay change. As you evidenced recruiting takes a lot of essays, time, and I can’t take so many days off. At the same time I don’t believe It’s wise to leave the current job before finding a new one… What would you guys do in my shoes?
Huron? All those firms are the same nth tier litigation consulting firms. Well Written? That’s why you’ll see everyone jump ship every 6-24 months between FTI, Navigant, Huron, LECG, Alix Partners, EY, Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, so on and so forth. It’s all damages calculations or worse, managing ediscovery document reviews.
